There was no single winner across critics’ polls, awards, review scores and box office. Aftersun topped the BFI Sight and Sound critics’ poll; The Banshees of Inisherin led the Associated Press (AP) panel; Everything Everywhere All at Once won the 2023 Oscar for Best Picture; and Top Gun: Maverick led Rotten Tomatoes’ year-end score ordering and AP’s cited worldwide box-office summary. Each answer reflects a different definition of “best.”
Which movie was named the best of 2022?
The answer depends on who was doing the choosing and what they were measuring. These results are not interchangeable: a critics’ poll reflects its voters, an Academy Award is an industry award, a review aggregator summarizes critics’ scores, and box-office revenue measures ticket sales.
| Measure | Winner | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| BFI Sight and Sound critics’ poll | Aftersun | First on the BFI’s 50-film list, voted on by 93 UK and international Sight and Sound contributors who watched films in cinemas, at festivals or online during 2022. |
| AP Top 25 panel aggregate | The Banshees of Inisherin | Highest Borda-count total among ballots from 26 U.S. film writers, reporters and critics ranking films that premiered publicly in calendar 2022. |
| Academy Award for Best Picture | Everything Everywhere All at Once | Winner at the 95th Academy Awards, held March 12, 2023, honoring films released in 2022. |
| Rotten Tomatoes year-end ordering | Top Gun: Maverick | First in the cited list based on Tomatometer scores as of December 31, 2022, with the ranking formula accounting for variation in review counts. |
| Worldwide box office reported by AP | Top Gun: Maverick | Led AP’s end-of-2022 global box-office summary, with $1.5 billion worldwide based on studio figures compiled by Comscore. |
What did critics choose?
BFI Sight and Sound: Aftersun
The British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound poll placed Charlotte Wells’s Aftersun first on its list of the 50 best films of 2022. The result came from 93 contributors in the UK and internationally, and the poll’s range included commercial action, genre films, documentaries, animation and arthouse cinema. See the BFI Sight and Sound poll.
Associated Press: The Banshees of Inisherin
AP’s panel combined 26 individual Top 25 ballots using a Borda count. The 176 films represented across those ballots show that the panel considered a broad field, but its winner was close: The Banshees of Inisherin scored 392 points, eight more than runner-up Everything Everywhere All at Once at 384. This is the result of that U.S. panel and its method, not a vote by all critics. Read AP’s Top 25 and methodology.

That makes it the direct answer to “Which movie won Best Picture for 2022?”—but an award outcome is not a universal ranking of every film from that year. See the Academy’s 2023 ceremony results.
