Searchlight Pictures suspended production on Being Mortal in April 2022 after receiving a complaint. Bill Murray later said he had meant to do something funny that was not received that way, but did not publicly describe the conduct. In October, The Guardian summarized Puck’s reporting of more specific allegations and a reported settlement. Those later details remain attributed claims, not an adjudicated finding.
Why was production on Being Mortal suspended?
On April 20, 2022, TheWrap reported that Searchlight Pictures had suspended production after becoming aware of a complaint. TheWrap reproduced a studio letter to the cast and crew stating: “After reviewing the circumstances, it has been decided that production cannot continue at this time.” The letter said the studio hoped production could resume, but did not identify the person complained about or disclose the complaint’s details. What did Bill Murray say at the time?
In an April 30, 2022 CNBC interview, Murray acknowledged that his behavior had led to the production pause. CBS News quoted him saying, “I did something I thought was funny and it wasn’t taken that way.” He described the issue as a “difference of opinion,” said the studio had stopped production to investigate, and did not publicly specify what he had done. He also remarked, “The world is different than it was when I was a little kid.” CBS News’ April 30 account
What did later reporting allege?
On October 11, 2022, The Guardian summarized a report by Puck alleging that Murray straddled and kissed a younger female production assistant while both were wearing masks. The Guardian reported that the woman described his actions as entirely sexual and said she was horrified. These are details attributed to the later reporting; the reporting available here does not establish an adjudicated finding, and the underlying complaint and investigative findings were not made available in the cited accounts. What was reported about a settlement?
The Guardian also summarized Puck’s report that Murray and the woman reached a settlement. According to that account, Murray reportedly paid about $100,000, and the woman agreed to confidentiality and waived legal claims against producers. The agreement itself was not reviewed in the reporting cited here, so its amount and terms should be understood as reported, not independently verified.

The film was reported as an adaptation of Atul Gawande’s 2014 nonfiction book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. That context identifies the project’s source material; it does not resolve the disputed circumstances behind the production pause. The Los Angeles Times’ April 30 report
