Amazon’s U.S. July 2025 lineup announced Heads of State for July 2 and Ballard for July 9. One is an action-comedy film about two rival world leaders forced to work together; the other is a 10-episode cold-case crime series in the Bosch universe. These are two highlights from a broader monthly slate, not its complete list.
July 2025 release dates at a glance
| Title | Format and premise | Announced U.S. release | Franchise connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heads of State | Action-comedy film: rival U.S. and UK leaders must cooperate after becoming targets of a foreign adversary. | July 2, 2025 | Standalone film premise; no franchise connection is identified in Amazon’s announcement. |
| Ballard | Crime-drama series following an LAPD detective investigating cold cases. | July 9, 2025; all 10 episodes debuted that day. | Part of the Bosch universe and based on Michael Connelly’s works. |
These dates come from Amazon’s U.S. July 2025 Prime Video roundup. Amazon’s release article for Ballard confirms its 10-episode debut.
What is Heads of State about?
Amazon describes Heads of State as an action comedy starring Idris Elba as UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke and John Cena as U.S. President Will Derringer. The leaders have a public rivalry, but must put it aside after a foreign adversary makes them targets. The announced supporting cast includes Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Paddy Considine, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid and Sarah Niles.
Amazon’s film announcement also describes the premise and its Prime Video release. Its “streaming now” wording referred to the context when that article was published; it does not establish the film’s present-day catalog status.

What is Ballard about?
Maggie Q stars as Renée Ballard, an LAPD cold-case detective investigating long-forgotten crimes. Amazon identifies the series as the latest entry in the Bosch universe and says Ballard had appeared in the Bosch: Legacy series finale. In the spinoff, she investigates LAPD cold cases with help from Harry Bosch, played by Titus Welliver. Amazon says the series is based on Michael Connelly’s works; its announcement does not establish which specific novel season one adapts.
