Liam Hemsworth was born in Melbourne and later grew up on Phillip Island, where surfing became a defining part of his teenage life. He has recalled competing in the sport from ages 13 to 18, while also describing himself as a troublesome student. After returning from Neighbours, he left school and laid floors while auditioning for acting roles.
Where did Liam Hemsworth grow up?
Hemsworth was born in Melbourne. His family later moved to Phillip Island, a change that placed him near the coast and helped make surfing central to his adolescence. Biography.com recounts this move but does not give a date for it. Biography.com’s biography of Liam Hemsworth was updated August 21, 2019.
Surfing was a serious commitment in his teens
Hemsworth has described surfing not simply as a pastime but as something he pursued competitively. In a quotation reproduced by Biography.com, he recalled: “I surfed competitively from age 13 to 18. Every day, before and after school. I wanted to surf for the rest of my life. It’s what all my friends did—it was a subject in school for a number of years.” The ages and routine here are his own recollection, not an independently documented competition record.
He said he was a difficult fit at school
In a 2014 report by SBS News relaying an interview with Now magazine, Hemsworth described himself as “a naughty kid” and said he was repeatedly removed from class. That account reflects his characterization of his school experience; it does not establish a broader academic record. SBS News reported the interview on February 24, 2014.

He left school and laid floors while auditioning
SBS’s account says Hemsworth returned from working on Neighbours, decided he did not want to go back to school, and left. He then worked laying floors while auditioning for acting roles. The sequence shows the practical work he took on as he pursued auditions; it does not mean surfing directly led to his acting career.

A 2016 American Way interview profile says Hemsworth’s brothers encouraged his interests, including surfing and acting. He also spoke about the values he was raised with: “I was brought up with a great family and great values and was always taught to respect other people’s opinions, religion, beliefs and everything like that.” The profile offers his perspective on family and upbringing, rather than a detailed account of particular childhood events.
