A 2004 interview described him as a greeter who welcomed customers with freestyle rhymes; a later retrospective reported that he started at age 15. West also recounted a separate telemarketing job while he was trying to sell beats, so the available accounts do not establish one complete sequence of his early employment.
Did Kanye West work at the Gap?
Yes. The Irish Times interview published November 26, 2004 describes West working as a greeter at a Chicago Gap. He said he stood inside the entrance, greeted customers, and freestyled as he did it. The article reports his recollection that the store fired him for rapping: “And to think that they fired me for rapping,” he said.

The interview says the Gap job followed an unsuccessful attempt to sell knives door to door because, as West put it, he was not suited to that work. It does not give a precise start or end date for his employment at the store.
How old was he, and what was his role?
A 2015 i-D retrospective reported that West began working at a Chicago Gap in 1992, when he was 15, and described the job as high-school sales work. That year and age come from the retrospective; the 2004 interview calls him a greeter but does not date the job. The sources do not establish an official job title.

West later connected the work to his interest in clothing. As quoted by i-D, he recalled: “When I was working at the Gap at 15, I don’t think I had any desire to actually make clothes, but I always felt like that’s what I wanted to be around. I loved the fabrics, I loved the colors, I loved the proportions.”
What was West’s telemarketing job?
West separately described working in telemarketing while trying to sell beats. In a 2003 Complex interview, he said he returned to Chicago after an unsuccessful record-deal meeting, tried to sell his beats, and took a telemarketing job. He said he liked that work because he could sneakily listen to music while doing it.

That account concerns a different job from the Gap role. The interviews do not establish whether telemarketing came before or after his time at the store, so it is more accurate to treat them as separate snapshots than to force them into a definitive timeline.

It was an early ordinary job, not the whole beginning of his music career. West’s account of telemarketing places that work alongside his effort to sell beats, while the Irish Times describes him developing as a producer before his own recording deal and debut album, The College Dropout. The Gap story is memorable because it connects an everyday retail job with his later interest in fashion—and, in his recollection, with the raps he performed for customers.

In 2015, West also expressed a later ambition involving the brand, telling Style.com, “I’d like to be the Steve Jobs of the Gap,” as relayed by the Los Angeles Times. That remark is later context, not evidence about his teenage job.
