Season 22 aired on ABC from February 18 to May 19, 2024, with Ryan Seacrest hosting and Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie judging. It was also Perry’s final season on the show.
What changed in American Idol’s 2024 season?
The clearest format change came during Hollywood Week: contestants performed solo in an Idol Arena setup, the duet round was dropped, and the Showstoppers round determined the Top 24. Later, themed live episodes gave the competition a different weekly frame, including songs from contestants’ birth years, a Judges’ Song Contest, an Adele night, and a Disney night.

Other distinctions were less sweeping. The season featured auditions in three cities that Collider identified as hometowns of the judges, and it ended with Abi Carter winning, Will Moseley finishing second, and Jack Blocker third.
Which familiar faces returned—and what was changing?
Ryan Seacrest returned as host, with Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie on the judging panel. ABC announced the returning judges and the audition launch on July 25, 2023. On February 13, 2024, five days before the season premiere, Perry announced that the season would be her last.

That meant viewers saw the established panel together for one more season, even as Perry’s planned departure signaled a change ahead. Season 22 ran for 18 episodes on ABC.
Where were the 2024 auditions held?
Collider’s April 8, 2024 article highlighted Santa Barbara, Tuskegee, and Leesburg as audition locations linked to judges’ hometowns: Santa Barbara to Katy Perry, Tuskegee to Lionel Richie, and Leesburg to Luke Bryan. The article itself could not be directly accessed to verify the detail, so this is best understood as Collider’s reported location observation—not evidence that the show adopted a broader hometown-based scouting policy.

How did Hollywood Week work?
Season 22 used an Idol Arena format for Hollywood Week. Contestants were selected at random to perform solos, rather than taking part in the duet round used in other formats. After those performances, the Showstoppers round determined the Top 24.
Auditions also included three platinum tickets, according to the season overview. That audition perk was separate from the Hollywood Week changes: the major structural distinction in the middle of the competition was the shift to random solo performances and the removal of the duet round.

What were the live-show themes?
Themed episodes shaped several weeks of the live competition. On April 28, the Top 10 performed songs from their birth years, with Shania Twain serving as guest mentor. The next night, the Judges’ Song Contest put judges in the role of selecting contestants’ songs; Perry also saved one contestant from elimination.
The later themed episodes were centered on Adele’s music on May 5 and Disney songs on May 12. These themes gave the weekly performances a distinct focus while contestants continued competing for audience votes and a place in the finale.

Abi Carter won Season 22. Will Moseley was the runner-up, and Jack Blocker finished third. The finale aired May 19, 2024, closing a season that preserved the familiar on-screen lineup while changing Hollywood Week and varying the live rounds with themed performances.
