A Nude Hope was an adults-only Star Wars parody burlesque by Vancouver collective Geekenders. A July 2015 feature described a theatrical comedy that used striptease as part of its storytelling—not simply as an interlude between jokes.
What was A Nude Hope?
A Nude Hope combined burlesque with goofy musical theatre, comic character performances and altered dialogue inspired by Star Wars. In a July 24, 2015 feature, Mika McKinnon described Geekenders as a Vancouver, British Columbia burlesque collective and reported that it had staged the show intermittently since November 2013.
The performance’s risqué material was woven into its theatrical gags. McKinnon gave examples including a title reveal in corset linings and a Death Star joke staged with a performer in a headstand. The emphasis was on recognizable references and physical comedy as well as striptease.
How did the show approach burlesque?
Artistic Director Fairlith Harvey described the production as “gateway burlesque,” presenting its mix of humor, narrative and audience connection as central to the experience. In McKinnon’s 2015 Gizmodo/io9 feature, Harvey said: “I tend to think of the show as ‘gateway burlesque’. It is risqué without being vulgar, and funny without being crass. We think cleverness, storytelling, and actively earning the audience’s love is more interesting than trading a striptease for dutiful applause. Many of us come from a theatrical background and don’t want to compromise that. We like surprising people.”
