Valerie Bertinelli wrote that Eddie Van Halen’s final words to her and their son, Wolfgang, were “I love you.” She said they repeated those words to him before he stopped breathing. The account comes from her memoir, Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today, as reported by ABC News.
What Bertinelli said were their final words
In the memoir passage quoted by ABC News, Bertinelli wrote: “’I love you’ are the last words Ed says to Wolfie and me,” adding that those were the last words she and Wolfgang said to him before he stopped breathing. The exchange, as she recalled it, was shared by all three.
When the exchange took place
ABC News reported that Bertinelli and Wolfgang visited Van Halen daily in the hospital. Bertinelli described sitting with him on Friday night; on Tuesday morning, Wolfgang called her because Van Halen’s breathing had changed. Van Halen died on October 6, 2020.
Where the account comes from
The passage appeared in an excerpt from Bertinelli’s memoir, Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today, shared by People and covered by ABC News. It is Bertinelli’s written recollection, not a published recording or independently verified transcript of the conversation. The Independent and NME also reported the memoir account.
