The band expressed solidarity with Palestinians seeking peace and statehood, while Bono also condemned Hamas’s attack, criticized the Israeli government’s actions, affirmed Israel’s right to exist and called for hostages to be released and humanitarian aid to reach Gaza.
What was U2’s Gaza statement?
The post, titled “On Gaza,” appeared on U2’s official website on 10 August 2025. The opening says the band wants its audience to know where each member stands. Each of the four members contributed a statement.
The band also said it was pledged to donate to Medical Aid for Palestinians. Hot Press reported the pledge the following day, but the published material cited here does not state the amount or establish that the donation was completed. Hot Press’s 11 August report and Euronews’s 11 August coverage also described the announcement.
What did Bono say about Gaza?
Bono’s statement combined condemnation of the Hamas-led attack at the Nova music festival with sharp criticism of the Israeli government’s conduct in Gaza and the West Bank. He said Hamas is not the Palestinian people and the Israeli government is not the nation of Israel. He described the Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, as deserving “categorical and unequivocal condemnation.” These are Bono’s stated positions, not independent findings.

He affirmed support for Israel’s right to exist and for a two-state solution. He also expressed solidarity with Palestinians seeking peace, coexistence and statehood, as well as with the remaining hostages. He called for humanitarian professionals to have access to Gaza and the West Bank.

Bono also cited a figure of “more like 600” trucks per day for humanitarian aid, attributing it to former UK prime minister Gordon Brown. That is a figure in Bono’s statement, not an independently verified or current operational estimate.

What the statement does—and does not—establish
U2’s post is evidence of what the four members said and when they said it. Its humanitarian-aid figure is attributed to Bono’s account, and the donation announcement establishes a pledge rather than a confirmed payment. This article describes the statement published in August 2025; it is not an update on conditions in Gaza.
