Yes. On Dec. 15, 2025, Donald Trump posted that Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, had died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others” through what Trump called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME,” or “TDS.” That was Trump’s claim, not an established explanation for their deaths: contemporaneous reports said police were investigating and had not publicly stated a motive.

What Trump posted about Rob Reiner

In a Truth Social post on Dec. 15, Trump said Reiner had been afflicted with what he called “a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.” He wrote that the couple had died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others.” CBS News reproduced the post, and The Associated Press reported its central claim.

In this post, “TDS” was Trump’s abbreviation for “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” It is a political phrase he used, not a medical diagnosis.

Did police say Reiner was killed because of TDS?

No. The reporting available on Dec. 15 described the deaths as an apparent homicide under investigation and said police had not publicly ascribed a motive. Trump’s post suggested a reason, but the cited coverage did not report that investigators had confirmed it.

AP reported that Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday, Dec. 14. Reuters reported that their son, Nick Reiner, had been arrested on homicide charges and that police had not stated a motive. CBS News reported that police said he was being held without bail. These are reports from Dec. 15, 2025, not an update on the case’s later status.

What Trump said when asked about the post

Later on Dec. 15, Trump was asked whether he stood by his remarks. He said he was not a fan of Reiner, called him “a deranged person, as far as Trump is concerned,” and said he thought Reiner was “very bad for our country.” The exchange was recorded in a RealClearPolitics transcript; AP also reported his response.

How elected officials responded

The post drew criticism from both Republicans and Democrats. Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky called it “inappropriate and disrespectful discourse” about a man who had been brutally murdered, according to AP. Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” AP reported.

Reuters reported that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson urged people to “appeal to our better angels.” Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla called Trump’s comments “disgusting and deranged,” according to CBS News.

Why Reiner’s politics were part of the dispute

AP described Reiner as a vocal Trump critic. In 2017, Reiner called Trump “mentally unfit” and “the single-most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States,” AP reported. That history helps explain the political context of Trump’s post; it does not establish a motive for the deaths.

AP also reported that Michele Singer Reiner photographed the cover of Trump’s 1987 book The Art of the Deal. The detail reflects an earlier connection, but the reporting does not link it to the deaths.

What the Dec. 15 reports do—and do not—establish

The reports establish what Trump posted, his follow-up remarks, reactions from elected officials, and the investigative status reported that day. They do not establish the later outcome of the investigation or any court proceedings. A current case update requires an authoritative, up-to-date police or court record.
