In a February 2025 amended complaint, Donald Trump added a federal false-advertising and unfair-competition claim to his lawsuit over CBS’s editing of Kamala Harris’s 60 Minutes interview. He also added Paramount Global as a defendant, Rep. Ronny Jackson as a co-plaintiff, and raised the damages demand to $20 billion. Those were allegations, not court findings. Paramount later settled for a reported $16 million allocation; the available reporting does not establish a ruling on the case’s merits.
What prompted Trump’s lawsuit against CBS?
The dispute began with two broadcasts of Harris’s October 2024 interview. On October 31, Trump sued CBS News in federal court in the Northern District of Texas, Amarillo division. He argued that the excerpts showed different portions of her answer about the Middle East and that the editing misled viewers and advantaged Harris. CBS News’s account of the lawsuit and broadcast described the two excerpts and the parties’ positions.
CBS disputed that characterization. The network said the interview had not been doctored and explained: “Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response.” CBS also said Trump had been invited to interview and declined.
The original complaint sought at least $10 billion and relied on the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Consumer Protection Act, a state consumer-protection law. It was not a defamation claim. In CBS News’s contemporaneous report, University of Chicago law professor and First Amendment scholar Geoffrey R. Stone questioned whether the consumer law applied to editorial decisions in news programming, saying, “But CBS is not engaged in advertising here.” That was Stone’s legal opinion, not a court ruling.

What did the amended complaint add?
In February 2025, Trump’s amended complaint changed the framing of the case from an alleged violation of Texas consumer law to include a claim under the federal Lanham Act. The amendment alleged false advertising and unfair competition, added Paramount Global as a defendant and Jackson as a co-plaintiff, and increased the demand to $20 billion. The Los Angeles Times reported the amended demand and allegations; CBS News also reported on the amendment and the later settlement.
The plaintiffs alleged that CBS had commercial reasons to make Harris appear more coherent and decisive, and that the broadcasts diverted viewership and commercial value from Trump-linked media interests, including Truth Social. Those claims describe the plaintiffs’ theory of harm. The cited reporting does not establish that CBS diverted viewers, that Harris benefited, or that the editing was deceptive.

Did Trump win the lawsuit?
Not through a reported merits judgment. CBS News reported on July 2, 2025, that Paramount agreed to settle for a $16 million allocation. The reported terms directed the money to Trump’s future presidential library and the plaintiffs’ fees and costs; Trump and Jackson were not to receive direct payments. The settlement included no apology. Paramount maintained that the suit was without merit and that 60 Minutes followed its standard editing process. CBS News’s settlement report describes those terms and the parties’ positions.
A settlement resolves a dispute without necessarily deciding whether the allegations were true or whether a defendant was legally liable. The reported $16 million was a settlement allocation, not damages awarded after a court found CBS liable.

What else was reported about the settlement?
Under the reported agreement, 60 Minutes would release transcripts of future presidential-candidate interviews, subject to redactions for legal or national-security concerns. Separately, a Senate subcommittee letter dated July 29, 2025, criticized the settlement and requested information about its relationship to Paramount’s merger. That letter records lawmakers’ criticism and questions; it does not establish that the settlement was exchanged for regulatory approval. The Senate letter is distinct from a court finding.
The case should also be distinguished from the separate FCC inquiry mentioned in the July 2025 settlement coverage. That reporting described the inquiry as open at the time; its status after that report is not established here.
