How Peter and Rose get pulled into the same case
Peter is an FBI agent assigned to Night Action, a covert program whose emergency phone sits in the White House basement. The line is supposed to stay quiet. Instead, Rose—a technology CEO—calls after assassins kill her aunt and uncle, Emma and Henry Campbell.
Peter gets Rose to safety and begins investigating with her. The Campbells were also Night Action agents, and their murders are connected to what they had uncovered: a conspiracy reaching back to the bombing of a DC Metro train.

What the Metro bombing was really about
The bombing was not simply an attack on the train. Vice President Ashley Redfield and defense contractor Gordon Wick arranged it as cover for an attempt to kill Omar Zadar, a foreign political leader. Colin carried out the bombing, but Peter stopped the train early. Zadar survived.
That distinction matters: Colin was the person who physically bombed the train; Redfield and Wick were behind the plot to use the attack to kill Zadar. The Campbells had been investigating the bombing and its political implications. Dale and Ellen, the assassins working to protect the conspiracy, killed Emma and Henry when they got close to the truth.

How the investigation reaches the White House
Diane Farr helps contain the scandal
White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr helps conceal Redfield and Wick’s involvement and manage the cover-up. Her choices put her on the conspirators’ side, even as she frames her actions as serving a larger purpose. Series creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan describes the season’s moral compromises this way: “There are people here who make bad choices for what they think are the right reasons,” he told Netflix Tudum.
Farr is shot during the events surrounding the conspiracy but survives. Season 1 does not show her trial or settle her legal fate. Ryan says viewers can “safely assume that Diane Farr has a very difficult criminal trial in her future after probably a difficult hospital stay”; that is his expectation, not an outcome depicted in the season.

Maddie becomes another target
As the plot escalates, Colin kidnaps Redfield’s daughter, Maddie. Her abduction brings Peter, Rose, Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington, and Maddie into the struggle to stop the next phase of the plan.
What happens at Camp David
The conspirators’ final plan targets both Zadar and President Michelle Travers at Camp David. Peter, Rose, Chelsea, and Maddie help thwart the assassination attempt. Marine One explodes, but Travers is not aboard and survives.
Rank #4
- Michelle Travers: survives the attempt.
- Ashley Redfield: survives.
- Gordon Wick: escapes.
- Diane Farr: survives her gunshot wound; her trial remains in the future at the Season 1 ending.
What Peter learns about his father
After the crisis, Peter asks President Travers for the truth about his father rather than a medal. Peter Sutherland Sr.’s confession tape reveals a complicated betrayal: he accepted money from a foreign agent and supplied information about private contractors, contributing to a breach at the Pentagon. He later worked as a U.S. double agent to repair the damage and was killed while doing so.
The revelation does not erase his father’s original wrongdoing, but it explains why Peter’s understanding of him changes: the man who passed information also spent his final years trying to undo the harm.

Where Peter and Rose are at the end
In the final scene, Peter boards a jet and opens a “Night Action: Mission Brief.” He has moved from answering the emergency phone to becoming a field Night Agent. Rose returns to California to pursue her technology career. The season leaves their relationship unresolved; it does not establish that they are together when they part.
That is the key setup for Season 2: Peter has accepted a new assignment, while Rose has gone back to her own life. The season ends with those paths open rather than with a settled future for either of them.
