Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is the series’ ten-episode final season, and it has already aired. Before you start it—or return to the story—remember that Season 4’s galaxy-threatening crisis ended through diplomacy, while Burnham and Book’s relationship did not. The final season shifts to a search for the Progenitors’ technology, with Moll and the Breen competing for it.
Where Season 4 left the crew
The DMA crisis ended through diplomacy
Season 4 centered on the DMA, a destructive anomaly threatening inhabited worlds. Captain Michael Burnham helped the Federation make contact with Species 10-C and persuade them to stop the mining activity causing the destruction. The immediate crisis was resolved, but its consequences shaped the characters’ lives as the season ended.
Burnham and Book were separated
Cleveland “Book” Booker survived after Species 10-C rescued him. But Book had broken laws during the crisis, and he was sentenced; Burnham had to part from him. They reached the Season 5 handoff alive but emotionally distant, with their relationship unsettled.
Saru and T’Rina chose to explore their feelings
Saru returned from leave to support Burnham and contributed to the Federation’s diplomatic effort. He and Ni’Var President T’Rina acknowledged their feelings and decided to spend off-duty time together.

Burnham and Book are back in each other’s company at the start of the season, but their separation and its hurt have not simply disappeared. Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Burnham, summed up their status in StarTrek.com’s Season 5 cast preview: “Book and Burnham, they are the classic, old Facebook status of ‘It’s complicated.’”
What kind of season to expect
Martin-Green also described the season’s intended tone in that interview: “They wanted it to be adventurous, they wanted it to be fun, they wanted it to be kind of like the Indiana Jones season.” That is her account of the production’s aim: an adventure-driven final hunt, not a guarantee that every episode has the same tone.
