Spoilers for the Season 1 finale: Richter Belmont and his allies end the season with a rescue accomplished but the larger fight still unresolved. Alucard returns after centuries away, while Erzsebet Báthory remains a danger and Tera has become a vampire. Season 2 premiered January 16, 2025.
What happened at the end of Season 1?
Set in France in 1792 during the French Revolution, Castlevania: Nocturne follows Richter Belmont as he fights to uphold his family’s vampire-hunting legacy. The season’s central enemy is Erzsebet Báthory, a vampire messiah bent on blotting out the sun and imposing an endless night. Netflix’s finale explainer identifies the final episode as “Devourer of Light.”
As the finale begins, darkness eclipses the sun, leaving only a ring of light. Erzsebet has drunk ancient blood, magnifying her power, and transforms into Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war. Richter, Annette, and Tera set out to rescue Maria, who is captive.
The rescue reaches its climax when Alucard—Dracula’s son, absent for centuries—appears and drives off the vampires present. It is a reprieve, not a complete victory: Olrox survives, Drolta is apparently dead, Erzsebet remains a threat, and Tera has been turned into one of Erzsebet’s vampires. Alucard closes the season with, “I hope I’m not too late.”

Who is safe, and who remains a threat?
Maria survives the rescue
Maria is Tera’s daughter and one of the group’s allies. Her captivity is the immediate reason Richter, Annette, and Tera mount the rescue in the finale.
Tera’s transformation puts mother and daughter on opposing sides
Tera ends the season as a vampire aligned with Erzsebet. The finale therefore leaves Maria’s family relationship caught up in the larger conflict.

Erzsebet and Olrox are still in play
Erzsebet’s transformation demonstrates her growing power, but the heroes have not stopped her plan to bring about endless night. Olrox also survives the finale. Drolta, by contrast, appears dead; the official account does not state her fate more definitively.
Why does Alucard’s return matter?
Alucard is Dracula’s son and had been missing for centuries. His arrival changes the balance at the rescue, but Season 1 does not explain why he returned at that moment or what happened during his absence. Those questions remain open rather than established answers about his past.

Where does Season 2 pick up?
Netflix’s Season 2 preview says the season premiered January 16, 2025. It brings Richter, Maria, Annette, Edouard, and Tera back into the story, with Alucard joining Richter’s group. The hunters’ next goal is to stop Erzsebet from gaining Sekhmet’s full power and plunging the world into darkness.
The essential setup is a rescue that did not settle the war: Maria is at the center of a family rupture, Alucard has rejoined the fight, and Erzsebet’s pursuit of Sekhmet’s power continues.
