There is no required Santa snack. Alongside the familiar milk and cookies, families might leave carrots for the reindeer, mince pies, a regional holiday food or drink, or a note. The choices reflect household and local customs—not a universal menu.
Easy alternatives for Santa’s plate
- Carrots: A familiar extra in the American tradition is to leave carrots for Santa’s reindeer, as well as cookies and milk. HISTORY reports that the cookie-and-milk custom took off in the United States in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. HISTORY describes this as a popular tradition, not a rule for every family.
- Mince pies: HISTORY reports that children in Britain and Australia may leave mince pies and sherry for Father Christmas.
- A letter: A note to Santa is a simple non-food option. HISTORY also reports that children in Germany may leave letters for the Christkind, a different gift-bringer tradition.
Any ordinary plate or handwritten note can make the ritual personal; no special serving dish is needed.
What different traditions leave out
These are examples reported by the cited sources, not customs followed by every family in a country. The visitor—and whether an animal is part of the tradition—varies.
| Tradition or context | Offering described by the source | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| United States Christmas Eve | Cookies and milk; carrots may also be left | Santa; carrots are for the reindeer |
| British and Australian Christmas Eve | Sherry and mince pies | Father Christmas |
| Swedish custom | Rice porridge | Not specified in the HISTORY account |
| Irish custom | Guinness | Not specified in the HISTORY account |
| French Père Noël tradition | Wine for Père Noël; hay, carrots, or other treats for his donkey | Père Noël and his donkey |
| German Christkind tradition | Letters | The Christkind |
| Three Kings Day / Epiphany | Cookies; some children also set out grass or hay and water | The Three Kings and, in some customs, their camels |
The country-specific Christmas Eve examples come from HISTORY. The Smithsonian describes cookies for Los Reyes Magos and grass or hay and water for their camels as Three Kings Day customs; this is an Epiphany tradition, not simply another Santa menu. Smithsonian National Museum of American History

Animal offerings have their own context
Carrots for reindeer are part of the familiar American Christmas Eve custom described by HISTORY, but they are a playful tradition, not animal-care advice. Other gift-bringer traditions have different animal offerings: the National Park Service notes historical offerings of carrots and hay for Sinterklaas’s horse. It also describes milk and bread for the Holy Family in Irish custom. Those examples belong to their specific historical and regional contexts, rather than to one shared Santa tradition. National Park Service, Fort Stanwix National Monument
Choose a version that suits your household
- For a familiar Christmas Eve setup, use cookies and milk, with carrots as an optional reindeer treat.
- For a Father Christmas-inspired plate, try mince pies; the cited account pairs them with sherry in Britain and Australia.
- For a no-food ritual, leave a letter or draw a picture.
- If your family celebrates Three Kings Day, keep that custom distinct: cookies and, in some traditions, grass or hay and water for the camels.
There is no need to rank one custom as more authentic than another. A small treat, a note, or the tradition your family already enjoys is enough.
