Nonverbal learning disorder (NVLD) is a term for a proposed learning profile often involving difficulty with visual-spatial information alongside relative verbal strengths. “Nonverbal” does not mean someone cannot speak. Tim and Gwen Walz publicly said their son Gus was recognized as having NVLD as he was becoming a teenager, and that he also has ADHD and an anxiety disorder. They have not shared a full account of his personal profile, and his public appearance is not evidence from which to infer symptoms.

What does “nonverbal learning disorder” mean?

In this term, “nonverbal” refers to information and skills that are not primarily verbal—especially visual-spatial processing—not to whether a person speaks. Someone described as having an NVLD profile may have relative strengths in vocabulary, rote learning, or recalling concrete facts, while finding some visual-spatial tasks more difficult.

The NVLD Project describes possible challenges with understanding spatial relationships, learning routes, manipulating objects in space, or completing fine-motor tasks. Math, organization, following multistep directions, and understanding humor or subtle social information can also be difficult for some people. These are possible features, not a checklist, and no one should be assumed to have all of them.

Definitions vary. Some accounts treat attention or executive-function difficulties as part of the profile; others consider them possible co-occurring concerns. The NVLD Project itself notes that some executive-function and attention problems may be co-occurring rather than defining features, and says clinical impressions about elevated anxiety or depression need stronger empirical support. A label alone cannot describe an individual’s abilities or needs.

Is NVLD an established diagnosis?

In the sources cited here, NVLD is not established as a separate diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The NVLD Project says it submitted a proposal to the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM Steering Committee in May 2022, and that the committee requested information about the proposed criteria’s performance and utility. A request for data or consideration of a proposal does not mean a diagnosis has been adopted.

A 2025 peer-reviewed work-group report proposed consensus criteria under the name Developmental Visual-Spatial Disorder (DVSD), describing it as a reconceptualization of NVLD for DSM consideration. That is a proposed diagnostic name and criteria set, not confirmation that DVSD or NVLD has been added to the DSM. The two labels therefore should not be presented as interchangeable with an established DSM diagnosis.

Research definitions are also not automatically clinical diagnostic tools. For example, a 2025 JAMA Network Open study used its own research algorithm: it required visual-spatial reasoning deficits, impairment in at least two specified functional domains, intact word reading, and no autism-spectrum screening symptoms. Those study-specific rules should not be used by readers to diagnose themselves or someone else.

How common is NVLD?

There is no single accepted prevalence estimate in the cited material. A Los Angeles Times report described a 2020 JAMA Network Open study estimate of 3% to 4% of U.S. children and adolescents, and a separate 2024 Scientific Reports study estimate of up to 8% among children. These are estimates from different studies and years, not a settled consensus or directly comparable measurements. Differences in definitions and methods matter while criteria remain under development.

What has the Walz family shared about Gus?

The Los Angeles Times reported on August 23, 2024, that Tim and Gwen Walz said Gus was recognized as having NVLD “when he was becoming a teenager,” and also had ADHD and an anxiety disorder. The family did not specify all the differences they noticed as he grew up. They described him as “brilliant [and] hyper-aware of details that many of us pass by,” as quoted in the report.

The same report clarified that NVLD does not mean Gus cannot speak. That addresses a misunderstanding of the name; it is not a clinical assessment of Gus. His emotional reaction at the Democratic National Convention, or any other public moment, should not be treated as evidence of a diagnosis or used to speculate about his private symptoms, supports, or medical history.

How can families seek an evaluation and support?

A thorough neuropsychological evaluation can document an individual’s specific strengths and difficulties. The NVLD Project recommends sharing the evaluation with relevant therapists, learning specialists, and school-based professionals so that support is based on the person’s actual learning profile, rather than assumptions attached to a label.

Possible supports should be chosen for the individual, not prescribed universally. The NVLD Project FAQ discusses social-skills groups for some children and organizational or learning support for managing workload; these are examples, not a treatment plan for everyone. A qualified clinician can assess co-occurring concerns and advise on clinical decisions.

The Los Angeles Times report also described strategies suggested by experts, including breaking problems into manageable steps and learning scripts for unfamiliar social situations. These are reported strategies, not a proven protocol that will suit every person. The useful question is which specific task is difficult and what support helps that person manage it.
