CD recycling is not universal: some places accept discs at designated facilities, while others exclude them from recycling or direct them to household waste.
Sort your CDs by condition and what you want to do with them
Start by separating discs you want to keep from those you no longer need. Then divide the unwanted ones into playable, good-condition discs and damaged or incomplete items. A disc’s condition helps determine whether reuse is realistic; it does not tell you which waste bin or facility your local rules allow.
- Keep: Titles you still listen to, value, or want to own physically.
- Offer for reuse: Playable discs in good condition that someone else might enjoy.
- Check local disposal instructions: Broken, unwanted, or unaccepted discs, along with cases and inserts if local guidance treats them separately.
Keep and care for the discs you value
The German Environment Agency recommends storing CDs in a cool, dark place, holding them by the edge or centre opening, and cleaning them with a soft, lint-free cloth. It advises against applying labels or using solvent-based markers. These are care recommendations, not a guarantee of how long any disc will last. See the agency’s CD and DVD guidance.
Sell, exchange, or give away playable CDs
Good-condition music, audiobook, and film discs may find another listener through a used-media shop, an online buyer or marketplace, an exchange, friends, or local groups. The German Environment Agency recommends selling, exchanging, or giving away discs where possible. Wandsworth and Richmond Waste Authority also names Music Magpie as an option for selling or donating unwanted discs in its area; availability and current terms should be checked directly.

Whether selling is worth the effort depends on the titles, their condition, and what a buyer will accept. The official guidance cited here does not establish resale values, so do not assume that every CD will sell or bring in meaningful money.
Donate only after checking that the organization accepts CDs
Charities and other organizations set their own acceptance rules. Contact the intended recipient before dropping anything off, and describe the types and condition of the discs. Calgary’s guidance specifically recommends confirming donation acceptance with the preferred charity. A playable disc is a reuse candidate, not a guarantee that an organization will take it.

Check local rules before recycling or throwing CDs away
There is no single recycling rule for CDs. The German Environment Agency describes CDs and DVDs as predominantly polycarbonate and recommends using take-back systems or the recycling bin within the German system. Its advice is not a universal instruction for other countries or municipalities.

These examples apply to the named local systems, not to other places. Look up your local authority’s instructions for the disc, case, and paper inserts separately where necessary. Do not put a CD in curbside or mixed recycling just because it is plastic.

Reuse ideas are different from recycling and may not be practical for everyone. West Sussex mentions using discs in a garden to deter birds or for craft projects; West London Waste suggests making decorations from damaged discs. Treat these as optional ideas, and use your local disposal route if a disc is not suitable for reuse.
