1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf a group is targeting you online, deal with immediate physical danger first. Otherwise, preserve evidence before blocking or deleting anything, report the posts and accounts to the platform, tighten contact and privacy settings, and seek help from someone you trust. If someone has posted your address or other private details, treat it as a safety concern—not just an upsetting post. The right regulator, legal threshold, and emergency number depend on where you live.
A pile-on can be difficult to assess because the pattern may involve many accounts, repeated messages, or posts appearing across a service. You do not have to solve every part at once. Start with the safety question, then make a record of what is happening, report the relevant content, and get support as needed. The steps below draw on official Australian and United States guidance; reporting routes and legal rules vary by location.
1. Check whether there is an immediate safety risk
If you believe you or someone else is in immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services now. Do not wait for a platform to review a report. If the abuse includes threats against you, your family, or friends, contact police, especially if you think a threat could be acted on.
In Australia, the eSafety Commissioner advises people in immediate danger or at risk of harm to call Triple Zero (000). Emergency numbers and police procedures differ elsewhere, so use the appropriate local service. See the eSafety Commissioner’s reporting guidance.

It can help to separate an urgent safety concern from harmful content that is not an immediate physical emergency. A threatening message, for example, may still warrant police contact even if you are not sure it will be acted on. If you are uncertain about the risk, do not treat a platform report as a substitute for asking police or local emergency services for help. The appropriate contact depends on where you are; the Australian emergency number and reporting guidance do not apply everywhere.
2. Preserve evidence before blocking or deleting
Save enough information to establish what happened, where it appeared, and how the incidents connect. A single screenshot may not show the pattern behind a pile-on, so keep a dated record of repeated posts, messages, and contact attempts. The goal is not to gather everything on the internet; it is to retain a clear record of the relevant content and its context while it is still available.
- Capture the post or message, including relevant surrounding context.
- Record the platform, direct URL, account name, and profile link.
- Note the date and time, and how often the abuse has occurred.
- Keep platform report confirmations or reference numbers.
- Store the record somewhere you can access safely if posts or accounts disappear.
For a repeated campaign, keep entries in a consistent format: when it happened, where it appeared, which account was involved, what was posted or sent, and whether it was reported. This makes it easier to see frequency and connections that may be missed when looking at one post at a time. Keep the surrounding context too; an isolated screenshot may not show why you see the incidents as part of a pattern.
The eSafety Commissioner explains how to collect evidence, including details to retain, in its evidence collection guide. Preserve information before blocking if you think the account or content may become inaccessible. Do not save or share illegal content or intimate images of anyone under 18; ask an appropriate authority or trusted adult for help instead. If the person targeted is a child or teenager, an adult can help preserve permissible records and make reports without circulating prohibited material.

Use the service’s reporting tools for each relevant post, message, or account. A coordinated campaign may involve multiple accounts or different kinds of content, so report each item that violates the service’s rules rather than assuming one report covers everything. Keep any confirmation or reference number with your incident record.
When possible, describe the behavior as a pattern, not only as a single upsetting item: note that the same person or multiple accounts have contacted you repeatedly, and include the relevant dates and account details you recorded. A report should identify the specific content or account in question; your record can help you keep the reports organized. Platform tools and categories differ, so use the options the service provides and retain the confirmation if one is given.

Reporting an item to a platform is distinct from contacting police or a regulator. A platform may review a report under its own rules, while authorities and regulators follow local procedures and thresholds. Do not assume that one route automatically notifies another or that a report guarantees removal.
For people in Australia, the eSafety Commissioner generally requires content to have been reported to the service first before it investigates adult cyber abuse or child cyberbullying. Its guide to reporting abuse or content to eSafety explains the process. This is an Australian pathway; readers elsewhere should check their own regulator’s requirements.

After preserving evidence, use the controls the platform provides—such as mute, hide, restrict, or block—to reduce unwanted contact and visibility. Review who can message you, view your posts, find your account, or see location information. If you share location publicly or through a service, check those settings too.
These controls do different things on different services, so check the options available rather than assuming one setting changes everything. A mute or hide control may reduce what you see; restricting or blocking may limit some interaction. The sources do not promise that any of these actions will stop a group from targeting someone. They are ways to reduce contact or exposure while you use reporting and support channels.
Avoid replying to or retaliating against the group. Limiting contact may reduce exposure, but it cannot guarantee that the group will stop, and it does not replace reporting or safety steps when threats or private information are involved. Before using a control that could make an account or post inaccessible, preserve the evidence you may need.
5. If someone posted your address or other private details
Doxing means intentionally exposing someone’s identity, private information, or personal details online without consent and with the intent to cause harm, according to the Australian eSafety Commissioner. An address becoming public can create risks beyond the platform, so preserve the post and account details, report the content to the service, and seek assistance. If the disclosure creates an immediate risk of physical harm, contact local emergency services or police.

eSafety’s doxing guidance recommends collecting and preserving evidence, blocking unwanted contact, and seeking help. Consider what information is exposed and whether you need support to address the practical safety concerns. Do not engage with people threatening you in an attempt to negotiate removal.
If you are asking, “What if they posted my address?”, treat it as both an online-content problem and a possible safety issue. Record where the information appeared, the account details, and when you found it, then report the post to the service. Contact local emergency services or police if you believe the disclosure puts you or someone else in immediate danger. Even when the threat is not immediate, seek assistance rather than trying to manage a potentially serious exposure alone. The definition and legal response to doxing can depend on jurisdiction; eSafety’s definition and advice are Australian guidance.
6. Choose the right escalation route for age and location
Adults in Australia
The eSafety Commissioner’s adult cyber abuse service is for Australia. Its pathway concerns content intended to cause serious harm and that is menacing, harassing, or offensive in all the circumstances; the content must first have been reported to the service or platform. These are specific Australian criteria, not a universal definition of online abuse or a promise that content will be removed. Details are on the adult cyber abuse reporting page.
That distinction matters when deciding where to report. The fact that behavior feels coordinated or distressing does not by itself establish that it meets a regulator’s threshold. Keep records and use the applicable platform and local reporting routes; eSafety’s Australian adult cyber abuse process is a particular pathway with its own conditions.
Children and teenagers
Involve a trusted adult and use a child-specific support and reporting route. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has a separate cyberbullying reporting pathway. The FBI also advises preserving chats and shared material and reporting crime to the appropriate authorities in its online safety advice for kids and teens. Do not blame or punish a child for being targeted. The restriction on saving or sharing illegal content or intimate images of anyone under 18 still applies.
A child or teen should not have to decide alone whether repeated abuse is serious enough to report. A trusted adult can help keep a record, use the platform’s reporting tools, and identify an appropriate local support or authority route. If the content includes illegal material or intimate images of anyone under 18, do not copy or circulate it as evidence; seek help from the trusted adult or appropriate authority instead.

People outside Australia
Use local emergency services for immediate danger and check your country’s police, regulator, and platform-reporting processes. The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s definitions, eligibility, and investigation thresholds do not automatically apply in other countries. There is no single universal process established for reporting every coordinated-abuse campaign.
Your location can affect which body handles a complaint, what content qualifies for a regulator’s process, and whether a report to the platform must come first. If you are outside Australia, use the Australian material as practical guidance on documenting and reporting, not as a statement of your legal rights or a guarantee about outcomes where you live.

7. Get support while the reports are being handled
Tell someone you trust what is happening and ask them to help keep a record or make reports if doing so feels difficult. A counselor or relevant local support service can help you manage the impact and think through safety concerns. For credible threats, physical-safety concerns, or doxing that could expose you to harm, seek assistance from police or an appropriate local service rather than handling it alone.
Having another person help can make practical tasks more manageable: they can help organize dates and links, check that report confirmations are retained, or sit with you while you contact a support service. Share only what is needed for that help, and do not circulate illegal content or intimate images of anyone under 18. If you are supporting someone else, listen without blaming them and help them choose the next safe step.
You do not need to buy equipment or software to take these steps. The essential actions are to preserve evidence safely, report through appropriate channels, reduce unwanted contact, and seek human support when needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if a group is targeting me online?
First assess whether you or someone else is in immediate physical danger. If so, contact local emergency services; contact police about threats against you, family, or friends. Otherwise, preserve a dated record of posts, messages, URLs, account details, and repeated incidents; report the relevant content and accounts to the platform; then use available controls and review privacy settings. Seek help from someone you trust or a local support service.

Should I block them or save screenshots first?
Preserve relevant evidence before blocking if you think an account or its content could become inaccessible. Record the platform, URL, username and profile link, date and time, context, and how often incidents occurred. After that, mute, hide, restrict, or block as appropriate. Do not save or share illegal content or intimate images of anyone under 18.
How do I report a pile-on?
Use the platform’s tools to report each relevant post, message, or account, rather than assuming one report covers a campaign involving multiple accounts or kinds of content. Keep report confirmations or reference numbers with your incident record. In Australia, eSafety generally requires a report to the service first before it investigates adult cyber abuse or child cyberbullying. Other locations have their own processes.
What if they posted my address?
Preserve the post and account details, report it to the service, and seek assistance because exposing private details can create safety and privacy risks. If you believe the disclosure creates an immediate risk of physical harm, contact local emergency services or police. The eSafety Commissioner’s doxing definition and guidance apply to its Australian context.
Does reporting mean the content will be removed?
No removal outcome is guaranteed by the guidance here. Platforms use their own reporting tools and rules, and regulators have their own local processes and thresholds. Keep your record, follow the relevant local route, and contact police or emergency services when there are credible threats or immediate safety concerns.
The Bottom Line
If a group is targeting you online, prioritize immediate safety, preserve evidence before blocking or deleting, report the specific posts and accounts, and limit further contact through available controls. Treat doxing and threats as potential safety concerns, not merely platform disputes. The correct emergency, police, and regulator route depends on your location and, for young people, age-specific support may apply. You do not have to handle it alone.
