2026 trick-or-treat hours vary by community
Some local governments publish a schedule, some recommend hours, and others leave the timing to neighborhoods and residents. These examples illustrate the variation for Saturday, October 31, 2026; they do not establish a national schedule.

For the most reliable answer, look for a current city or county announcement, then check neighborhood event notices. Confirm both the start and end time, since a nearby town’s schedule may not apply where you live.
If your area has no posted hours
Plan for early evening around dusk, while treating that as a local custom rather than a standard. Arlington County says its activity usually coincides with sunset, just after 6 p.m. on Halloween 2026. A Kingsport Police Department notice from 2019 described 5–8 p.m. as typical in that community. Neither establishes a national time. Ask neighbors or check for a local event, and respect homes that are not participating.

When to finish
Follow the posted local end time and set a return time that suits the children and route. There is no universal cutoff established by the local schedules above. Several 2026 examples end at 8 p.m.; separately, Boston Police advised in 2025 that trick-or-treating should ideally go no later than 8 p.m. That is advice from one city, not a nationwide rule.

- Accompany young children with a responsible adult and choose familiar, well-lit streets.
- Set a route and return time before leaving. Choose costumes that do not obstruct vision, and add reflective material or carry a flashlight or glow stick.
- Use sidewalks and crosswalks, and visit homes with outside lights on. Chicago Police advises limiting activity to daylight hours when possible; if going out in the evening, confine visits to homes with outside lights.
- Have an adult inspect treats before children eat them.
These precautions are reflected in guidance from Arlington County, the City of Rockville, the Chicago Police Department, and the City of Buffalo.
