Why the reveal changes Max’s place in the story
Before this reveal, Max’s fate could be understood mainly through her apparent absence from ordinary action. Holly’s discovery changes that status: Max is shown to be present in the season’s supernatural conflict, inside the mindscape associated with Vecna. It also gives Holly a direct connection to Max’s predicament.

That is the supported meaning of the twist as a “game-changer.” It shifts what viewers know about Max’s presence; it does not, by itself, establish that she has awakened physically, escaped, recovered particular abilities, or been rescued.
How the twist fits the final season
Netflix’s season synopsis places the story in fall 1987, after the opening of the Rifts. It describes Hawkins as scarred and the heroes as focused on finding and killing Vecna, while the government quarantines Hawkins and hunts Eleven. In that setting, the reveal places Max’s predicament within the season’s larger conflict with Vecna rather than resolving it.
