Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 10, “Cold Harbor.” In the finale, innie Mark helps Gemma reach the exit, then turns back and runs with Helly. The choice is not simply a decision between two women: creator Dan Erickson describes it as Mark claiming his own existence and love, even though the decision is both righteous and selfish. The episode answers that immediate question while leaving Cold Harbor’s full purpose—and the meaning of Dr. Mauer’s warning—open.
What happens at the end of “Cold Harbor”?
Outie Mark and innie Mark communicate through a camcorder at the cabin. Outie Mark asks his innie to help rescue Gemma, who is being held on Lumon’s testing floor. Innie Mark is wary of being treated as a tool for someone else’s life, but he returns to Lumon and completes the Cold Harbor file.
On the testing floor, Mark finds Gemma’s Cold Harbor innie disassembling a crib. He helps her escape. At the exit, Gemma leaves, but Mark turns back toward Helly instead of following her out. The final image is Mark and Helly running together down the hall.
That ending lands within the series’ central premise: Lumon’s severance procedure separates employees’ memories between their work and personal lives, as Apple’s official series description explains. The Season 2 premiere was released January 17, 2025, according to Apple.

Why does Mark choose Helly instead of Gemma?
Erickson cautions against reading the scene as a straightforward romantic contest. For innie Mark, following Gemma through the exit could mean ceasing to exist; his outie would resume control, and the innie’s life could end. Mark’s decision is therefore also about whether he gets to count as a person with a life of his own.
Erickson told TV Insider that Mark’s arc moves from rushing to find Gemma to prioritizing his own existence and love. The creator calls the choice “both a righteous decision and a selfish decision,” a tension that makes the moment difficult rather than neatly heroic.

The cabin conversation helps explain why Mark does not simply accept the rescue plan. Erickson says innie Mark sees signs that his outie regards him as a means to an end. When outie Mark gets Helly’s name wrong, the pitch breaks down for the innie. Their conversation is the first face-to-face exchange between the two Marks, but the finale does not establish that they reach a lasting agreement.
What is Cold Harbor, and what does the crib mean?
Cobel explains that Mark’s file work relates to Gemma’s mind and that completing files creates new consciousnesses for her. The finale shows Gemma’s Cold Harbor innie assigned to take apart a crib, tying the test to the couple’s painful history and their wish to have a child. It does not confirm the test’s full purpose or what Lumon hopes to learn from it.

Erickson said in a TheWrap interview that the crib scene was intentionally left open to interpretation. One question it raises is whether pain from Gemma’s outside life can affect this innie, reversing the direction of earlier testing-floor questions about whether pain experienced inside might affect her outside. The episode does not establish what the answer is—or why it matters to Lumon.
Who does Dr. Mauer mean by “You’ll kill them all”?
The finale does not identify who “them all” refers to. Erickson told TV Insider that it could mean Gemma’s innies or someone else, and declined to settle the question. Any more specific answer is a theory, not a confirmed explanation.

What does the final image of Mark and Helly mean?
Director and executive producer Ben Stiller said he had the image of Mark looking between Gemma and Helly in the hallway in mind as the season built the stakes of both relationships. The ending developed into Mark and Helly running together: a moment of connection, but not a rescue or a resolution. As Stiller put it to the Los Angeles Times, “The idea of the freeze frame on them at the end: OK, we’re together. But they’re stuck in this really hellish reality.” Their choice is made; what happens to them next is not.
