A New York Times investigation published May 30, 2025, reported allegations that Elon Musk’s drug use during 2024 “went well beyond occasional use.” The account described claims from people familiar with Musk’s activities; they are allegations reported by the Times, not independently established findings. The reporting did not establish that Musk was impaired while doing government work.
What the Times investigation alleged
In an account of the investigation reproduced by the Indian Express, the Times said people familiar with Musk’s activities described frequent ketamine use, sometimes daily, as well as use of ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms. It also reported that Musk had a daily medication box containing about 20 pills, including pills with markings associated with Adderall. These details are claims attributed to the report’s sources, not independently verified findings established here.
The Indian Express account said the reporting drew on private messages obtained by the Times and interviews with more than a dozen people who knew or worked with Musk. The number describes the investigation’s reported interview sourcing; it is not a measure of drug use more broadly.
What Musk had said about ketamine before the report
In a March 2024 interview with Don Lemon, Musk said he had a ketamine prescription and described using it to address negative moods. The Associated Press reported that Musk said he did not think he abused the drug. He also said: “If you’ve used too much ketamine, you can’t really get work done, and I have a lot of work.” Those earlier remarks neither prove nor disprove the later Times report.

How Musk and the White House responded
According to the Indian Express account, Musk and his lawyer did not respond to requests for comment before publication. A White House spokesman later praised Musk’s work but declined to comment on the alleged drug use.
Asked about the Times report at the White House on May 30, 2025, Musk attacked the publication’s credibility and said, “Let’s move on,” according to TIME. TIME reported that the White House did not directly answer questions about the allegations.

What remains unclear
The Times account said it was unclear whether Musk was taking drugs while he was a fixture at the White House in 2025. TIME likewise reported that it remained unclear whether he was under the influence in his government role. Allegations about conduct in 2024 do not establish impairment at work or during government duties.
