It also hints at Roswell and a decades-long cover-up—but the footage does not explain how those clues fit together, and its edited sequence should not be treated as a confirmed timeline.
What does the new Disclosure Day trailer reveal?
Universal frames the film around a question: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?” The trailer’s mystery is therefore not simply whether aliens exist in the story. It is what counts as proof, who possesses it, and what happens when evidence reaches the public.
According to Jeff Spry’s March 16, 2026 analysis of the trailer for Space.com, the preview connects two characters through an apparent alien-language event: meteorologist Margaret Fairchild speaks in clicking sounds during a live broadcast, while cybersecurity whistleblower Dr. Daniel Kellner says he can understand the language. The preview’s editing suggests a connection, but does not establish its cause or give a complete account of what either character knows.
Who speaks the alien language, and what does Kellner understand?
Margaret Fairchild’s broadcast
Space.com identifies Emily Blunt’s character, Margaret Fairchild, as a Kansas City meteorologist. Its reading of the footage describes her speaking a clicking alien dialect on air. The trailer presents the broadcast as a striking public event, but does not establish whether Fairchild is communicating deliberately, reacting to something, or experiencing an unexplained change.

Daniel Kellner’s claim
Josh O’Connor plays Dr. Daniel Kellner, described in the trailer analysis as a cybersecurity whistleblower. He says he can understand the language and is shown with data that the analysis connects to a shadowy organization. That juxtaposition raises the possibility that he has uncovered evidence or institutional knowledge; the preview does not confirm the data’s contents, the organization’s identity, or how Kellner learned to interpret the speech.
What do Roswell and the cover-up suggest?
The trailer analysis also points to Roswell imagery and a cover-up reaching back to 1947. These are clues that the film may connect the present-day events to a much older history of secrecy. They are not, by themselves, a full explanation of the plot or confirmation of what happened at Roswell in the film’s story.

Space.com cautions that the trailer’s scenes are not necessarily shown in chronological order. The broadcast, Kellner’s investigation, the organization, and the Roswell material may be related, but the preview does not establish their exact sequence or causal links. Treat a trailer theory as an interpretation until the film supplies context.
Is Disclosure Day connected to Close Encounters of the Third Kind?
The similarities have prompted speculation: both films evoke alien communication, glowing UFO imagery, and government secrecy. Space.com raises the possibility of a “secret sequel” as a question, while noting there are no direct references in the trailer. There is no confirmed studio information establishing that Disclosure Day continues Close Encounters of the Third Kind; the available official material describes it as an original event film.

Steven Spielberg created and directed Disclosure Day; the story is by Spielberg and the screenplay by David Koepp. In an Associated Press interview published June 3, 2026, Spielberg said, “It’s my first film that will be considered science fiction that I do not consider to be science fiction.” He also said, “I’ve been a believer since I made ‘Close Encounters’ 50 years ago.” Those are his personal remarks and do not establish that the film’s fictional events are real.
What is confirmed about the film?
Official materials identify the principal cast as Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. Peacock’s U.S. listing also includes Wyatt Russell and identifies Blunt’s role as Margaret Fairchild and O’Connor’s as Dr. Daniel Kellner. Universal announced a U.S. theatrical release for June 12, 2026. Amblin’s official film page confirms Spielberg’s and Koepp’s creative roles.
