The Moon was a waxing crescent on September 25, 2025: its visible sunlit portion was less than half of the disk and growing. The date fell between the New Moon on September 21 and First Quarter on September 29.
What the moon looked like on September 25, 2025
On that date, the Moon was a waxing crescent. It appeared partly illuminated, with the lit portion increasing as the Moon moved from New Moon toward First Quarter. The U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) defines a waxing crescent as less than half illuminated, with the illuminated fraction increasing: USNO explanation of Moon phases.
The phase describes both the Moon’s appearance and whether its illuminated portion is growing or shrinking. It is distinct from a particular observation’s moonrise, moonset, or position against the local horizon.
Which lunar events bracketed the date?
The USNO’s 2025 primary-phase data give these event times in Universal Time:

| Event | Date and time (UTC) | Relevance to September 25 |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | September 21, 2025, 19:54 | Preceded the date |
| First Quarter | September 29, 2025, 23:54 | Followed the date |
These primary-phase times are published by the U.S. Naval Observatory Astronomical Applications Department. September 25 falls between the two events, consistent with a waxing crescent.
How much of the Moon was illuminated?
Illumination is a percentage of the visible lunar disk; it complements the named phase rather than replacing it. As one specific example, timeanddate lists 15.2% illumination for Seattle at lunar noon on September 25, 2025. That figure is tied to Seattle and that reference time, so it should not be treated as a universal percentage for every location or hour. See timeanddate’s Seattle 2025 Moon-phase calendar.

What can observers say about local viewing?
The waxing-crescent phase and illuminated fraction describe the Moon’s appearance independently of an observer’s location. Moonrise and moonset times, as well as the Moon’s orientation and view above a particular horizon, depend on location. Because no observing location is specified here, no local rise or set time applies. The USNO distinguishes its phase information from location-specific rise and set data in its Moon-phase data scope.
