The scene sets up trouble that could fuel another story: Nalo is still a threat, Matangi’s relationship with him is unresolved, and Tamatoa has re-entered the picture. The directors said they wanted to leave room for more stories, but neither the scene nor their comments confirm an animated Moana 3. Disney’s listed 2026 Moana is a live-action reimagining of the original, a separate project.
What happens in the Moana 2 mid-credits scene?
After Moana and her crew set out toward further adventures, the film cuts to Matangi in a distant realm. Nalo, the storm god, confronts her about how a human reached Motufetū and broke his curse. Matangi denies helping Moana. Nalo sees through her act and restrains her with lightning.
Matangi says she has paid her debt and that they are finished. Nalo answers, “No… we’re just getting started.” Then Tamatoa arrives, saying Moana humiliated him too. He tries to bond with Nalo and is promptly struck by lightning. The sequence appears in the published screenplay.

The scene establishes that Nalo remains a danger and that Matangi’s dealings with him are not settled. Tamatoa’s interruption adds a comic sting. It does not show Nalo confronting Moana again, fully explain Matangi’s motives, or identify a specific next film.
What did the directors say the scene means?
Director David Derrick Jr. told TheWrap the scene follows the crew’s euphoric departure with a pause and “some fun with our villains.” When the interviewer described it as hinting at future problems, Derrick Jr. agreed. Director Jason Hand said the filmmakers wanted the option to tell more stories, and that the scene led people to assume there would be a third film. He did not say one was confirmed or in production.

Derrick Jr. also said the sequence was initially conceived as the film’s ending. The filmmakers instead chose to end the main story with Moana and her crew chasing the horizon. Hand described Nalo’s continued existence as a useful threat “if we choose to go into 3.” That conditional is the key: the scene is deliberate sequel-capable setup, not an announcement.
What is confirmed about another Moana film?
Disney’s official listing for Moana (2026) describes a live-action reimagining of the original story and gives a release date of July 10, 2026. That listing does not confirm an animated Moana 3. It is accurate to say the credits scene “could set up” or “leaves room for” a continuation; it is not evidence of a confirmed third animated film or its release date.

What remains unresolved in the story?
- Nalo’s next move: The scene makes clear that he is still an antagonist, but gives no details about what he will do next.
- Matangi’s position: Her claim that she has paid her debt, alongside Nalo’s distrust, leaves their relationship unsettled. Derrick Jr. characterized her as “she’s team Moana, but she has to play both sides for a while because she’s in a tricky spot.”
- Tamatoa’s role: He says Moana humiliated him, but the scene does not establish whether he will matter beyond this brief encounter.
These are open story threads, not answers supplied by the film. The scene’s clearest promise is a possible future conflict; whether Disney chooses to continue it remains a separate question.

Disney describes Moana 2 as reuniting Moana and Maui three years later, when a call from Moana’s wayfinding ancestors sends her on a new voyage. Its filmmaking-process page says the team consulted cultural experts in anthropology, history, dance and movement, canoeing and navigation, linguistics, and Pacific Island cultural practices. Nalo and the events in the credits scene are elements of the film’s fictional story; they should not be treated as claims about Pacific cultures generally.
