A New York Times report published May 30, 2025, alleged that Elon Musk’s drug use increased during the 2024 presidential campaign. The claims, as summarized by other outlets, came from people familiar with Musk’s activities; they are allegations, not independently established findings. The available coverage also did not establish whether Musk was under the influence while serving in government.

What did the report say?

Coverage of the Times report described allegations involving ketamine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms. It also said sources described a medication box containing about 20 pills, including Adderall. The details were attributed to sources cited by the Times, rather than presented as independently verified evidence. TechCrunch’s May 30, 2025 account and The Guardian’s coverage summarized those claims.

The Guardian also reported that Musk allegedly told people his ketamine use was affecting his bladder. That is a reported account, not an independently established medical finding.

What did Musk say about the report?

Asked about the story in the Oval Office on May 30, 2025, Musk criticized the Times, saying, “The New York Times. Is that the same publication that got a Pulitzer Prize for false reporting on Russiagate?” He then said, “Let’s move on,” according to TIME. His response attacked the outlet and ended the exchange; it did not address each allegation individually.

What had Musk previously said about ketamine?

In a 2024 interview with Don Lemon, Musk said he took “a small amount” of prescribed ketamine to treat negative moods about once every two weeks, TIME reported. He also said, “If you’ve used too much ketamine, you can’t really get work done, and I have a lot of work.” This earlier statement is relevant context, but it does not confirm the later report’s claims about his conduct during the campaign.

What is known—and what remains unclear?

The report concerned alleged conduct during the 2024 presidential campaign. The accessible coverage did not establish whether Musk was under the influence while serving in government. Without evidence establishing impairment, it would be unwarranted to connect alleged substance use to his government conduct or political decisions.

There is also an earlier, separate statement from Musk’s attorney. In January 2024, the Wall Street Journal reported Alex Spiro’s claim that Musk was “regularly and randomly drug tested at SpaceX and has never failed a test.” That statement predates the campaign period addressed by the 2025 report and does not resolve its allegations. The Journal’s report also described earlier company and board concerns attributed to sources; those accounts are distinct from the later campaign-period claims.
