Mischa Barton has said she experienced “general bullying from some of the men on set” of The O.C. and felt unsupported, but she has not named the people she meant. Her co-stars’ responses are narrower. Rachel Bilson said she did not personally witness any such treatment and disputed how Barton described the timing of her promotion. Melinda Clarke acknowledged the pressure of the work but said she did not know whether some of Barton’s comments were true. A 2023 Vanity Fair oral history adds personal memories of Barton’s workload and of a day she spent apart from the group. None of these accounts settles what happened on set.
The title’s phrase “on-set behavior” is a loose framing. Most of what the cast has said concerns Barton’s working conditions and experience. The only remarks about how she spent her time on set are recollections of her sitting apart from others.

What Mischa Barton has said
Barton, who played Marissa Cooper on the Fox series that ran from 2003 to 2007, said in 2021 that she had been reluctant to talk publicly about what happened behind the scenes. She described long, exhausting hours as the series lead and said she felt unsupported and unprotected. Her account is her own; the claims below have not been independently verified.
ABC News, May 19, 2021
In an interview reported by ABC News, Barton described the bullying she alleged and the workload that came with leading the show. She said the workload became too much around season two, when episodes were doubled up, and that she wanted to pursue film roles.

The Guardian, June 22, 2021
In a separate interview with The Guardian that June, Barton said she had “a couple of bad experiences behind the camera” and that they shaped her time on the show. She declined to describe them in detail, so the reporting offers no specific incident, date or person.
Her account of her possible exit
Barton linked her possible departure to three factors: the pressure and workload, her feeling that Bilson’s promotion to series regular had been “last-minute” and had affected pay, and a choice producers presented to her. She said she could either leave room for a possible return or be written out with Marissa’s death. Those are her recollections of negotiations that the reporting does not document from the producers’ side in detail.

How Rachel Bilson responded
Bilson disputed Barton’s description of her promotion. In the Los Angeles Times on June 2, 2021, she called the “last-minute” characterization “completely false” and said, “That’s misinformation.” She said she wanted to hear Barton’s perspective and that she “saw things a little differently.”
On the alleged bullying, Bilson said she did not know whom Barton meant. In the same report she said: “I don’t know who she’s referring to because I didn’t personally witness any of that.” Her response therefore covers her own observations and does not speak to events she did not see.
What Melinda Clarke said
Clarke, speaking to the Los Angeles Times on June 2, 2021, acknowledged the strain of the schedule on a young performer. “Someone who is 16, 17, 18 — that amount of hours of work, pressure, at such a young age — at best, you’re exhausted,” she said.
Clarke said some of Barton’s comments were perplexing to her and that she did not know the truth of them. Her remarks accept that the pressure was real while leaving the contested claims open. They should not be read as contradicting Barton’s experience.

Later recollections in the 2023 oral history
A Vanity Fair oral-history excerpt published November 15, 2023 gathered recollections from Barton, Bilson, Ben McKenzie, Adam Brody, Melinda Clarke, Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and production staff. The table summarizes the points attributed to speakers in that piece. McKenzie, Brody and Schwartz are part of the same oral history, but this article does not attribute a specific comment about Barton to them.
| Speaker | Role | What they recalled | Basis of the account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mischa Barton | Actor, Marissa Cooper | Recalled years in which she had only six days off; said filming plus publicity was exhausting; said she had little decision-making power under her contract. | Her own experience, recounted in 2023 after her 2021 interviews. |
| Rachel Bilson | Actor | Said Barton had a heavy workload and handled it gracefully. | Working alongside Barton; a favorable comment on Barton’s conduct under pressure, not a comment on the 2021 allegations. |
| Melinda Clarke | Actor | Recalled the strain of long hours for a young performer. | General observation of the schedule, recounted in 2023. |
| Stephanie Savage | Executive producer | Recalled one day on set when others were socializing and Barton sat alone; said in retrospect she wished she had invited Barton to join them. | Her own memory, given in retrospect in 2023. |
| Bob DeLaurentis | Producer | Recalled Barton sometimes sitting apart and reading. | His own memory, given in retrospect in 2023. |
Savage’s memory of the pool house day
Savage described the moment in detail: “There was one day when we were shooting, and it was a really nice vibe on set. Everyone was sitting around laughing, telling stories. Mischa was sitting in her chair out by the pool house by herself, with her back to us, reading a CAA script.” She said in retrospect that she wished she had invited Barton to join the group. A single observed afternoon does not show why Barton sat apart, and Savage’s account does not claim to know.

Workload, dissatisfaction and the production context
The oral history also records broader unhappiness with the show among several cast members, which places the production environment in context without making it the single explanation for Barton’s exit. It also includes multiple creative and business explanations for Marissa’s death. Producers described story, ratings and character considerations, while Barton said she had little say in such decisions under her contract.
What the sources can and cannot establish
- None of the reviewed reporting identifies the men Barton referred to in 2021. Readers should not attach the allegation to any named actor or crew member.
- Bilson’s account is limited to what she did not see. It neither confirms nor refutes Barton’s specific experiences.
- No independent investigation of the alleged treatment is documented in the coverage reviewed.
- The 2023 recollections describe workload, isolation and cast dissatisfaction. They do not prove or disprove the 2021 allegations.
- The cast did not collectively accuse Barton of misconduct. The public statements range from a direct denial of personal observation to a sympathetic description of her workload.
Three questions that overlap but are separate
Readers often treat three subjects as one: Barton’s treatment on set, her departure from the series, and the decisions that led to Marissa’s death. The sources connect them but do not make them the same question. Barton’s comments on bullying and support concern her working environment. Her exit concerns contract terms, workload and the choice presented to her. Marissa’s death concerns the show’s storytelling and business decisions, which the producers and cast explained in several different ways. Answers to one of these questions do not settle the others.
