Spoilers for the ending and both credits scenes. The asterisk in Thunderbolts* points to the team’s eventual public identity: the New Avengers. The ending reveals the name, while the credits scenes tee up a dispute with Sam Wilson over who gets to use “Avengers” and a possible Fantastic Four connection. Those are story hooks, not confirmation of what a future Avengers film will do.
Why the film is called Thunderbolts*
The film brings together Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, John Walker and Bob. Disney lists Jake Schreier as director, Kevin Feige as producer and May 2, 2025, as the release date on its official film page.
In the story, “Thunderbolts” has a personal, deliberately modest origin: TIME reports that it was the name of Yelena’s childhood soccer team, coached by Red Guardian. It is not a reference to Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. After the group saves New York, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine presents them at a press conference as the New Avengers. The asterisk makes the title a kind of footnote to that shift: “Thunderbolts” is the name the group starts with, while the ending supplies the new one. TIME describes the title and reveal in its ending explainer.
What director Jake Schreier says the asterisk was for
Schreier said he pitched the asterisk. In his original image, it appeared on a billboard as a temporary marker, accompanied by wording along the lines of “Until we come up with something better.” He also said the New Avengers reveal was already part of the story drafts he knew when he joined the project; the ending was “always baked in.” His account separates the punctuation’s creative origin from the story payoff: he proposed the asterisk, but the team’s eventual name was not a last-minute change to the ending. Schreier discussed it in a July 2025 Moviefone interview.

The title’s post-release presentation makes the connection explicit. Disney’s official film page uses the crossed-out Thunderbolts title alongside “The New Avengers.” Lewis Pullman, who plays Bob/Sentry, told Disney’s corporate publication that the title change was an unusually well-kept secret, describing it as “unprecedented” in his experience. That is his characterization, not evidence that no film has ever had a post-release title change. The remark appears in Disney’s interview with Pullman.
What the credits scenes set up for Avengers movies
| Scene | What it establishes | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| Sam Wilson objects to the New Avengers name | Sam challenges Valentina’s team for using the Avengers name and threatens legal action. TIME describes the moment as a copyright-infringement joke. | The scene does not establish that the teams will fight, which team will keep the name, or how the dispute will be resolved. |
| A Fantastic Four-marked ship arrives | The ship teases a connection between the Fantastic Four and the wider MCU story. The Los Angeles Times reports on the scene as a crossover tease. | It does not explain the Fantastic Four’s eventual role or resolve the New Avengers naming dispute. |
The first scene is directly about the Avengers identity: Valentina has named her group the New Avengers, and Sam objects to that claim. The second broadens the story with a Fantastic Four connection, but does not spell out its consequences. Taken together, the scenes point toward future crossover possibilities without confirming a particular plot or outcome. The scenes and their implications are discussed by TIME and the Los Angeles Times.
