What does the asterisk in Thunderbolts* mean?
In the film’s reveal, the team introduced as the Thunderbolts is presented as The New Avengers. Marvel later used that name in its post-release promotion, including a cast video unveiling “*The New Avengers.” Good Morning America reported on the announcement on May 5, 2025.
The ending makes the symbol’s function clear: it signals that “Thunderbolts” is not the name the group ultimately claims. TheWrap describes the end-credit title transition and the team’s public naming in its spoiler explanation of the ending.
Why Marvel kept the asterisk unexplained before release
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed at CinemaCon on April 11, 2024 that Thunderbolts* was the official film title, but said the studio would not explain the asterisk until after the movie came out. His statement was: “Yes, you’ll notice the asterisk on Thunderbolts*. That is the official title of Thunderbolts* and we won’t talk more about that until after the movie comes out.” ComicBook.com reported his comments.

The film title and the team name are not the same thing
The reveal explains the asterisk through the team’s name; it does not establish that Marvel formally renamed the movie. Marvel’s film page continues to present the Thunderbolts* branding while using The New Avengers in its presentation. The same page describes the group brought together by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and names Yelena Belova, Bucky, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker among its cast of characters.
