The detailed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker leak that BGR reported in December 2019 appeared before the film’s theatrical release. BGR later characterized its spoilers as accurate. The source behind the claims, however, was anonymous, and the Reddit poster’s account of vetting that source is not independent confirmation.
Spoiler warning: The sections below reveal major plot points from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
What did the Rise of Skywalker leak reveal?
BGR reported that a detailed post appeared in Reddit’s StarWarsLeaks community a few weeks before the film opened in theaters. Its account of the post included these major revelations:
- Darth Vader’s wayfinder leads Kylo Ren toward Palpatine, and Kylo agrees to help turn Rey to the dark side.
- Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter.
- Leia dies while reaching out to her son through the Force.
- Han appears to Kylo Ren/Ben in a scene that echoes Han’s death in The Force Awakens.
- Rey confronts a dark vision of herself.
- Palpatine survives and leads a Sith fleet; Ben ultimately saves Rey and dies.
These are plot details in BGR’s summary of the Reddit leak, not a verified, complete transcript of the original post.

Who said the leak was vetted, and how did the leaker know the plot?
According to BGR, the Reddit poster said a new source had contacted them, claimed to have seen the film, and was checked against other sources. BGR quoted the poster: “I vetted what they told me with other sources with confirmed validity, and this new person had enough accurate details that are accurate that haven’t been mentioned elsewhere to make me feel comfortable sharing this.”
That statement describes the poster’s claimed vetting process. The source remained anonymous in BGR’s account, and the material available here does not independently establish who the source was, whether they saw the finished film, or how they obtained the information.

Was the Rise of Skywalker leak accurate?
BGR’s article, updated in August 2022 and originally published on December 13, 2019, says retrospectively that the spoilers “turned out to be accurate.” That is BGR’s assessment after the movie’s release; it should not be confused with independent authentication of the anonymous source or proof that every detail in the Reddit post was checked scene by scene.
Lucasfilm’s official synopsis confirms the broad setup of the released film: the Resistance faces a new fleet of Sith warships led by Emperor Palpatine, Rey confronts the threat and secrets of her past, and Kylo Ren must choose between light and dark. The official synopsis establishes what the finished movie is about; it does not verify the leak’s provenance.
What is officially established about the film?
Lucasfilm describes The Rise of Skywalker as the ninth installment in the Skywalker saga and the conclusion of the sequel trilogy. J.J. Abrams directed it and co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio. StarWars.com lists its theatrical release date as December 18, 2019, its U.S. rating as PG-13, and its runtime as 2 hours 22 minutes.
Lucasfilm’s February 19, 2020 home-entertainment announcement scheduled digital release for March 17, 2020, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 31, 2020. That announcement gives an approximate runtime of 142 minutes, consistent with the film page’s rounded 2-hour-22-minute listing. These are historical release dates, not confirmation of current availability in any particular country.

How can you compare the leak with the finished story?
Watching the released film is the clearest way to make your own comparison. Lucasfilm announced digital and physical editions, including 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD, in 2020; choose a format compatible with your display and player. Current streaming rights, regional editions, and retailer stock can change, so check local listings before relying on availability.
Lucasfilm’s production page also includes the character line attributed to Lando Calrissian: “We had each other. That’s how we won.” It is a line from the film, not an interview quotation or evidence about the leak.
