Tarek El Moussa says a 2016 incident involving a firearm and a police response became a turning point in his marriage to Christina Hall. In a 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight (ET) about his book Flip Your Life, he described leaving their Yorba Linda home after an argument and walking into nearby trails with a pistol. His account is retrospective; ET’s coverage also includes the couple’s earlier statement and reporting about the response, which provide important context.
What did Tarek El Moussa say happened?
In an excerpt from Flip Your Life, reported by ET on January 31, 2024, El Moussa said that after an argument he left the couple’s Yorba Linda home carrying a .38-caliber pistol and went into nearby trails. He said he took the gun for protection from wild animals. This is El Moussa’s account as reported by ET, not an independently verified incident record.
El Moussa wrote that he saw a helicopter but did not understand that authorities were searching for him. He recalled being handcuffed after the response and described reacting, “Yes! I’m the guy from TV! What are you guys doing?” The excerpt and its details were reported by ET; the full book text and an official incident record were not reviewed.
What did the couple say at the time?
When the couple’s separation became public in December 2016, their joint statement, as quoted by ET, characterized the event as an unfortunate misunderstanding. It said police had been called as a precaution and stated: “There was no violence and no charges were filed.” That public statement is distinct from El Moussa’s later account in his book.

What did contemporaneous reporting say about the police response?
Us Weekly’s January 31, 2024 coverage summarized earlier reporting that authorities were called after a tip about a possibly suicidal man with a gun. That description reflects what the reporting said prompted the call; it does not establish El Moussa’s intent. In his later ET interview, he said he had no intention of harming himself.
How did El Moussa connect the incident to the end of the marriage?
In ET’s February 6, 2024 interview, El Moussa described his mental health at the time as poor and connected his difficulties to testosterone treatment following cancer treatment. Those are his retrospective statements, not medical findings. He said the incident contributed to the end of his marriage and spoke about Hall without blaming her: “I hold nothing against Christina. I understand why she did what she did.”
