T.M. Krishna’s 2017 remarks about M.S. Subbulakshmi questioned whether caste and social respectability shaped the singer’s public acceptance. They drew disagreement over how to interpret Subbulakshmi’s choices and history. In 2024, the remarks returned to focus amid protests over Krishna’s Music Academy honour and a separate legal dispute about an associated award bearing Subbulakshmi’s name. The Supreme Court’s December 2024 order was interim, not a final ruling on the dispute.
What did T.M. Krishna say about M.S. Subbulakshmi?
Krishna spoke in Hyderabad on November 24, 2017, at an event marking the release of a Telugu translation of T.J.S. George’s book about Subbulakshmi. The talk addressed culture and identity. As Scroll reported, Krishna argued that Subbulakshmi’s wider social acceptance involved distancing herself from her Devadasi background and becoming culturally legible as an “ideal Brahmin woman.” He described this as a tragedy and asked whether audiences would have celebrated her voice in the same way if it had come from a dark, non-upper-caste woman. He also suggested that sorrow became part of the emotional force of her music. These were Krishna’s interpretations of her public reception and artistry, not established facts about her private motives. Scroll’s report of Krishna’s 2017 remarks and responses.

After posing the question about how audiences might have responded to a different singer, Krishna said: “I don’t want an answer to that question. I just want us all to think about it.” The line was an invitation to consider his argument, not evidence of how audiences would actually have behaved.
Why did the remarks spark disagreement?
The debate set questions about social structure against questions about how fairly to interpret one individual’s life. Some responses challenged the framing of Subbulakshmi’s choices; others acknowledged caste privilege while warning against community-shaming. Those positions need not be mutually exclusive: people can recognise structural inequality and still dispute whether Krishna’s reading of Subbulakshmi is justified.

Objections to applying present-day assumptions
Singer Sudha Ragunathan objected to analysing Subbulakshmi’s personal choices through present-day assumptions and urged attention to her music. Her response questioned the method of interpreting a historical figure, rather than settling the broader question of caste and prestige in Carnatic music.
Recognition of privilege, with a warning about blame
Musician Anil Srinivasan acknowledged historical Brahmanical appropriation and the need to recognise privilege, while cautioning that shaming communities could polarise people. He also described assimilation as Subbulakshmi’s choice and said it had benefited her. Scroll’s account records several responses, not a survey of musicians or listeners, so they should not be treated as representative of the whole field.
What does caste have to do with Carnatic music?
Krishna’s comments raised a question beyond one singer’s biography: who has access to prestige, respectability and recognition in Carnatic music, and how have caste and gender shaped those standards? The 2017 report records his broader claim that the field was dominated by upper castes and did not offer artists from all communities equal footing. It also records support and trenchant criticism of that claim. The material cited here does not provide a population statistic or quantitative study measuring representation or exclusion, so it cannot establish their scale.
Later coverage describes Krishna’s criticism of the Chennai December Music Season as non-inclusive and his challenges to caste rigidities and gender politics. Those views formed part of the public context in 2024, when artists protested the Music Academy’s selection of him. The protests were not an undifferentiated response from all Carnatic musicians: Ranjani and Gayatri and other artists withdrew from the Academy’s season, while the Academy’s president defended the selection on the basis of Krishna’s musical excellence and career. Objections also concerned his political and social positions, criticism of traditional norms, and remarks about Subbulakshmi and other revered musicians. How was the 2024 award dispute different?
The 2017 controversy concerned Krishna’s interpretation of Subbulakshmi’s social acceptance and the role of caste in Carnatic music. The 2024 dispute concerned two connected but distinct matters: the Music Academy’s decision to award Krishna its Sangita Kalanidhi, and the associated Sangita Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi Award, a cash award instituted by The Hindu group after her death and linked to the Academy’s selection.
The Academy’s Sangita Kalanidhi dates to 1942. Reporting describes the Subbulakshmi-named cash award as instituted in 2004, beginning in 2005, with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. These are institutional details, not measures of caste representation. The Indian Express on the award and Madras High Court proceedings; The News Minute on the November 2024 ruling.
What the courts ordered
In November 2024, a Madras High Court single judge allowed the Academy to confer the Sangita Kalanidhi on Krishna but directed that Subbulakshmi’s name be removed from the mirror award, based on the judge’s reading of her will. A division bench later set aside that restraint, allowing the named award to be presented. The Supreme Court then issued an interim order on December 16, after the ceremony had taken place.
The Supreme Court said Krishna should not be recognised or project himself as recipient of the Subbulakshmi-named award while the appeal was pending. It described the direction as interim and recorded that the underlying civil suit remained before the Madras High Court. The order also noted that the plaintiff considered the language used about Subbulakshmi “not in good taste.” Justice S. V. N. Bhatti said: “This interim order should not be seen as a reflection either on the Music Academy or the Hindu publication.” The direction concerned legal recognition as recipient; it did not undo the fact that the award had already been presented. What each side said
Subbulakshmi’s grandson’s suit characterised Krishna’s comments as disparaging and challenged the use of her name for the award. In a counter-affidavit, Krishna denied making vile or scandalous attacks, said he had repeatedly expressed admiration for Subbulakshmi, and argued that his remarks had been taken out of context. He said the Hyderabad observation concerned caste’s role in society. These are opposing party positions; the interim order did not decide the merits of the allegations or settle the underlying dispute.

The Supreme Court order described here was an interim measure issued in December 2024, not a final judgment that Krishna could never receive or refer to the award. The official records cited for the proceedings include a Supreme Court report dated March 17, 2025, and a listing report dated July 18, 2025. They do not establish the case’s status as of October 8, 2026. Any claim about a later final outcome would require a more recent court record.
