What did Sydney Sweeney say?
In a December 2025 interview with PEOPLE, Sweeney explained why she was responding after previously avoiding both positive and negative press. She said: “In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it.” She also said, “I’m against hate and divisiveness.” PEOPLE reported her comments.
Those statements convey her opposition to hate and her view that staying silent had deepened the division around the issue. They do not, by themselves, settle the competing interpretations of the campaign or establish that she endorsed any particular reading of it.
Why did the American Eagle campaign draw criticism?
The American Eagle denim campaign featured Sweeney under the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” Criticism focused especially on a teaser that played on “jeans” and “genes”: its copy discussed inherited traits such as hair and eye color before connecting the wordplay to blue jeans. Some viewers saw the language and imagery, including Sweeney’s blonde hair and blue eyes, as invoking eugenics and racialized beauty standards. Others regarded it as a straightforward pun about denim and said critics were reading too much into it. These were conflicting audience interpretations, not proof of the campaign’s intent. What did American Eagle say?
On August 1, 2025, American Eagle said the campaign “is and always was about the jeans” and said it would continue celebrating how people wear AE jeans with confidence. That was the retailer’s stated intent and defense of the campaign; it did not resolve why some viewers found the teaser’s genetic wordplay troubling. American Eagle’s Instagram statement presented the brand’s response.
The Associated Press reported that American Eagle’s chief marketing officer described the campaign’s language as “clever, even provocative” and said it was “definitely going to push buttons.” Those comments support describing the campaign’s planned tone as provocative. They do not establish that the company intended the eugenics interpretation or anticipated that specific criticism. The Associated Press reported the marketing chief’s remarks.

How to understand Sweeney’s response
The dispute is clearest when three separate things are kept distinct: American Eagle’s stated purpose was to promote jeans; critics objected to a teaser whose inherited-traits language made the jeans-and-genes pun seem loaded to them; and Sweeney later said she opposed hate and believed her silence had widened the divide. Her comments addressed her own response to the controversy, rather than offering evidence that settles the argument over the campaign’s meaning.
The available reporting establishes these remarks as a December 2025 response. It does not establish whether Sweeney has made a later public statement, or what the campaign’s verified commercial status was as of October 8, 2026.
