Sturla Holm Lægreid’s former girlfriend said it was hard to forgive him and painful to find herself discussed publicly after he confessed to infidelity on television. She spoke anonymously to Norway’s VG, saying they had been in contact and that he knew how she felt.
What did Lægreid’s former girlfriend say?
In a statement to VG, quoted in English by BBC Sport on February 11, 2026, she said: “It’s hard to forgive. Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.” She added: “We have been in contact, and he is aware of my feelings about this.”
She was not named in the coverage. Euronews reported on February 11 that VG left her anonymous because she had not sought the attention. Her words describe the position the public disclosure put her in; they do not indicate that she wanted to become part of the story.
How did the confession become public?
On February 10, 2026, Lægreid won bronze in the men’s 20 km individual biathlon at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. In a televised interview with Norway’s NRK after the race, he said he had been unfaithful to his girlfriend three months earlier and had told her about it a week before, according to BBC Sport’s report that day.

The race was won by Norwegian teammate Johan-Olav Botn, with France’s Éric Perrot taking silver. The confession therefore arrived on a day of celebration for Norwegian biathlon, while Lægreid’s former girlfriend—who had not chosen public attention—was drawn into coverage of his personal disclosure.
Why was Lægreid criticized for the timing?
Commentators and reports criticized the timing because the confession diverted attention from Botn’s gold medal. Botn had dedicated his victory to late teammate Sivert Guttorm Bakken. The criticism concerned the effect of the disclosure on the sporting celebration; the reports establish that it was voiced, not that everyone shared the view. Euronews covered the reaction and sporting context on February 11.
