Carell’s early life and education
Steve Carell grew up in Acton, Massachusetts, the youngest of four sons. His father was an engineer and his mother was a psychiatric nurse. He attended Denison University in Ohio, where he studied history and theater. The New Yorker reports that he graduated in 1984; a CBS profile says he earned degrees in both subjects. Why he chose acting over law school
Acting was not an obvious career plan at first. Carell told NPR’s Fresh Air in 2007 that performing had been a hobby: “That was just for fun. That was always a hobby for me.” He considered law school, but struggled to answer an application essay asking why he wanted to become an attorney. His parents encouraged him to pursue something he enjoyed. The available accounts establish that he considered law school, not that he formally applied or enrolled. (NPR’s Fresh Air)

How Second City shaped his career
Carell moved to Chicago and developed his craft at Second City, progressing from workshops to its touring company and then resident companies. The New Yorker dates his graduation from Denison to 1984 and his entry into a Second City touring company to 1987. CBS’s later profile describes five years of frequent performances with the troupe, including seven or eight shows a week; those figures describe the CBS account and should not be combined with the New Yorker’s milestones to calculate a more exact tenure. Second City gave him room to test characters and scenes in front of audiences. He also taught improv there, where he met Nancy Walls. One scene he developed through improv later inspired the poker sequence in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. His television work before The Office
The Dana Carvey Show
Carell’s early television credits included writing for The Dana Carvey Show. The New Yorker places him on the program in 1996, though the available accounts do not provide a more detailed breakdown of his work there. (The New Yorker; The Second City)
The Daily Show
Carell joined The Daily Show as a correspondent after Stephen Colbert recommended him for an audition, according to Carell’s Fresh Air interview. The format was a striking change from the live theater work he knew: he described it as an unusual mixture of acting, improvisation and simulated journalism. He also spoke about feeling uncomfortable with some field pieces that mocked eccentric people he considered vulnerable. Carell said he sometimes tried to make himself the target instead. Sources describe his tenure in different ways: CBS’s 2015 profile calls it five years, while Carell told Fresh Air he was there about three and a half years. From The Daily Show to The Office
Carell left The Daily Show in 2005. CBS reports that he filmed the pilot for the American version of The Office in less than six months after leaving, placing the transition close in time without establishing an exact filming date. His earlier theater, sketch-TV and correspondent work had given him a varied foundation before the sitcom became his breakthrough. (CBS News)
