In a January 30, 2024 roundup, The Guardian reported that Colbert joked the Swift–Travis Kelce story was “great for the NFL and for dads who struggle to bond with their teenage daughters.” He also noted that American Airlines had named a Kansas City-to-Las Vegas flight AA1989, a reference to Swift’s album, and made a joke about the plane’s bolts.

Colbert imagined an “Apple Music Super Bowl Half-time Show” built around shaky footage of Swift cheering from a skybox. At the time, her Tokyo concert was scheduled for the day before the February 11 game, so coverage treated a trip to Las Vegas as a timing question—not as proof she had booked or taken a particular flight.
What was the post-game private-jet joke?
After the Chiefs won on February 11, 2024, Swift was shown drinking beer during the celebrations. In its February 12 roundup, The Guardian quoted Colbert’s response: “Have fun, Taylor, but please make sure you have a designated driver for your private jet.” This was a separate, post-game punchline—not part of the earlier Tokyo travel speculation.

Did Taylor Swift fly from Tokyo to the Super Bowl?
The cited pre-game coverage discussed a possible Tokyo-to-Las Vegas journey, but it does not establish that Swift took that trip or confirm its flight details. The Associated Press described the route used in a carbon estimate as hypothetical, not as a measured account of Swift’s actual travel.
For that hypothetical itinerary, Gregory Keoleian, co-director of the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems, estimated that 19,400 miles on a Dassault Falcon 900LX could produce more than 200,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. The AP compared that rough estimate with about 14 times the average U.S. household’s annual emissions, citing U.S. Energy Information Administration data. The estimate depends on variables including the flight path and number of passengers; it should not be read as the verified footprint of Swift’s trip. How does private-jet travel compare with commercial flights?
A separate comparison concerns emissions per passenger, not the hypothetical Swift itinerary. The AP reported that a 2023 Institute for Policy Studies study found private jets emit at least 10 times more pollutants per passenger than commercial planes. That broad study-level comparison does not calculate the emissions of any one journey or establish that commercial travel was a practical substitute in this case. The AP’s report distinguishes the study from the route estimate.
What is known about Swift’s carbon-credit statement?
Swift’s publicist told the AP: “Taylor purchased more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel.” The AP reported that the statement came without supporting details. It is therefore an attributed claim, not independent verification that specific flights were fully offset; the report also noted broader questions about how offsets are assessed and reported. What do older flight-tracking estimates show?
CBS News reported a Yard compilation based on the now-defunct CelebrityJets social-media account. For January through July 2022, the compilation attributed 170 flights and 22,923 minutes in the air to Swift and estimated 8,293.54 tons of emissions. These are historical compiled estimates, not independently established current totals or a current ranking. CBS News describes the figures and their source.
