If you want the rapid, instrumental rush of Darude’s “Sandstorm,” start with late-1990s trance: Paul van Dyk’s “For an Angel” (1998 E-Werk Club Mix), Energy 52’s “Café Del Mar” (Three ’N One Remix), and Binary Finary’s “1998” (Paul van Dyk Remix). “Sandstorm” is often casually called techno, but Billboard describes it as trance. The picks below are listening routes, not claims that any track sounds identical.
Why “Sandstorm” is a useful comparison point
Darude, the stage name of Finnish producer Ville Virtanen, first released “Sandstorm” in Finland in October 1999; it reached international audiences after a 2000 release. DJ Mag called it one of dance music’s most recognizable tracks 25 years later. Darude summed up its unexpected reach this way: “It went viral, before viral was a thing.” DJ Mag’s 2024 retrospective

Billboard gives the track’s tempo as 136 BPM and describes it as instrumental. A specialist track page characterizes its lead as a rhythmic sixteenth-note pulse. Those details point to a particular kind of comparison: quick dancefloor drive and a repeating instrumental hook, rather than simply any song categorized as techno. - Paul van Dyk — “For an Angel” (1998 E-Werk Club Mix): A strong starting point if the era and club-trance setting matter more than matching “Sandstorm’s” insistent lead.
- Energy 52 — “Café Del Mar” (Three ’N One Remix): A 1997 remix and another classic-trance reference for a period-focused playlist.
- Binary Finary — “1998” (Paul van Dyk Remix): Another late-1990s trance selection to try alongside the reference track.
- ATB — “9 PM (Till I Come)”: An informal listener suggestion for Darude-adjacent instrumental trance and dance; treat it as a useful lead, not a definitive match. Listener discussion on r/electronicmusic
Instrumental dance anthems from other eras
If what you want is a memorable dance track without lyrics, rather than a close production match, widen the playlist beyond the trance era.
- Robert Miles — “Children”: Billboard cites it as an earlier instrumental electronic hit. It is a comparison in format and anthem role, not a claim that its sound mirrors “Sandstorm.”
- Martin Garrix — “Animals”: Billboard cites it as a later instrumental electronic hit, offering a more recent-era counterpart for listeners after a lyric-free club track. Billboard’s retrospective
Dance-pop crossovers if vocals are welcome
For the turn-of-the-millennium dance scene but with sung hooks in place of an instrumental lead, try Alice Deejay — “Better Off Alone” and Sonique — “It Feels So Good.” Billboard discusses both as international dance hits of 2000 that crossed toward pop. They fit the era and dance appeal, but not the lyric-free quality of “Sandstorm.” Its discussion also points to Paul van Dyk’s 2000 trance-pop album Out There and Back as a way to explore beyond one track. Build a wider playlist from Darude’s influences
Darude has said that, around the time he was making music, he listened to Sash!, Scooter, Faithless, and Antiloop, as well as Dutch and German trance in clubs. These names are useful directions for finding more music from the scene around “Sandstorm”; that does not mean every track by those artists sounds similar. Dave Pearce interview with Darude
