What Song Dethroned Mariah Carey? Two Different Chart Stories

Ella Langley surpassed Mariah Carey’s Hot 100 No. 1 tenure record in September 2026. Wham!’s earlier Global 200 No. 1 was a separate weekly result.

There are two answers, depending on which chart record you mean. In September 2026, Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” passed Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” for the longest cumulative run at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100: 23 weeks versus 22. Earlier, in December 2025, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Global 200 for a chart week, with Carey’s song at No. 2. The Hot 100 record was not a global-chart dethroning.

Which song dethroned Mariah Carey?

The answer depends on what “dethroned” refers to:

  • For the longest Hot 100 No. 1 tenure: Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” reached 23 cumulative weeks at No. 1 in September 2026, surpassing the 22-week record held by Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” according to Axios’s report citing Billboard.
  • For a Global 200 weekly ranking: Wham!’s “Last Christmas” took the No. 1 position in December 2025, while Carey’s song was No. 2 that week, according to The Independent.

These are different chart events, measured in different ways and at different times. Langley’s result is a longevity record on the U.S. Hot 100. Wham!’s was a No. 1 ranking on one week of the Global 200.

What did “Choosin’ Texas” take from Carey?

It took the record for the most cumulative weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Axios reports that Langley’s song reached 23 weeks at the top in September 2026, one more than Carey’s 22-week total.

The Hot 100 is a U.S. singles chart. Axios describes its inputs as U.S. streaming, digital and physical sales, and radio play. The result therefore describes performance in the United States, not a worldwide ranking. The Atlantic quotes Billboard chart executive Gary Trust describing the Hot 100 as reflecting “the biggest song in the U.S. each week”; that account places the chart’s start in August 1958.

Carey’s song, released in 1994, built its former record through repeated holiday-season returns to No. 1 from 2019 to 2026, rather than one uninterrupted stretch, Axios reports. Langley’s song followed a different path: after its October 2025 release, it debuted on the Hot 100, entered the top 10 in January 2026, and first reached No. 1 in February, according to Axios.

What happened on the Global 200?

In December 2025, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Global 200, placing Carey’s song at No. 2 for that chart week. The Independent reported that Carey’s song had a cumulative 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Global 200 at that time; that is a historical figure from the December 2025 report, not a current total.

The Global 200 result predates Langley’s September 2026 Hot 100 record and does not establish that Wham! surpassed Carey’s Hot 100 tenure. Conversely, Langley’s Hot 100 record does not mean “Choosin’ Texas” replaced Carey at No. 1 on the Global 200.

Why can a chart No. 1 feel unfamiliar?

A chart position measures performance under that chart’s rules; it does not mean every listener has heard the song or recognizes it. The Atlantic describes people saying they had not heard “Choosin’ Texas” even as it held the Hot 100 lead. That gap is possible because a chart result and an individual listener’s exposure are not the same thing.

The Atlantic reported that “Choosin’ Texas” had more than 1 billion Spotify streams as of mid-August 2026. That is a platform-specific stream count, not a count of unique listeners or a global chart position. The article also described the song appearing on Spotify’s “Today’s Top Hits” after rising from “Hot Country,” as well as mood-based playlists. Those placements offer context for its reach, but do not by themselves establish what caused its chart record.

Holiday songs have a different recurring pattern: seasonal listening can bring them back to the charts each year. TIME’s December 2025 account discussed chart rules for removing older songs from the Hot 100 recurrent chart, including thresholds it reported at the time: below No. 5 after 78 weeks, below No. 10 after 52 weeks, and below No. 25 after 26 weeks. Those are dated thresholds, not a guarantee of current rules; chart policies can change.

Event Chart and scope What the result measures Reported result
Ella Langley, “Choosin’ Texas,” September 2026 Billboard Hot 100; U.S. chart Cumulative weeks at No. 1 23 weeks, passing Carey’s 22-week record; Axios, 2026
Wham!, “Last Christmas,” December 2025 Billboard Global 200 Position in a particular chart week No. 1, with Carey at No. 2 that week; The Independent, 2025

The Global 200 is described as an international chart in the reporting cited here. The detailed territory coverage and weighting methodology are not established by these accounts, so the weekly result should not be embellished with unverified specifics.
