In a joke reported in 2015, Siri answered “What is zero divided by zero?” with a story about zero cookies and zero friends. Cookie Monster is sad because there are no cookies; the punchline adds that the listener is sad because they have no friends. The old reports do not establish whether Siri still gives this answer today.
What did Siri say about Cookie Monster?
Contemporary reports described the exchange as a Siri Easter egg. Siri’s reported answer began by asking the listener to imagine dividing zero cookies evenly among zero friends. The problem, the joke explained, is that it does not make sense to divide by zero.
It then delivered the punchline: “And Cookie Monster is sad that there are no cookies, and you are sad that you have no friends.” BetaNews reproduced that wording on July 1, 2015, and TIME reported the exchange the day before.
Why is Cookie Monster sad?
He is sad because there are no cookies. The answer turns an abstract math question into a silly scenario, then extends the joke to the person asking: with zero friends, there is nobody to share the cookies with—and no cookies to share.

How did Cookie Monster respond?
A July 1, 2015 ToughPigs report said Cookie Monster replied on social media: “Me no know how to divide by zero, but me know how to divide cookies into crumbs!” Us Weekly also reported the reply and attributed it to a post from June 30, 2015. These are contemporary outlets’ reproductions of the exchange, not independently authenticated transcripts from Apple or Sesame Workshop.

The available contemporary coverage does not confirm whether current Siri still gives the answer, or whether it varies by software version, device, language, or region. TIME’s June 30, 2015 account said the joke appeared to be working for iPhone users who had upgraded to iOS 8. That is a report about the exchange at the time, not a guarantee about Siri today.
