Simu Liu’s reported rating for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was 8.5/10. His follow-up—that the “lead actor is a little too full of himself”—was a self-deprecating joke, not a detailed review of the film.
What rating did Simu Liu give Shang-Chi?
On September 3, 2024, a Marvel fan account asked users to rate the film out of 10. CBR reported that Liu replied: “8.5/10. Decent movie but lead actor is a little too full of himself.” The original social-media post was not independently confirmed here, so the quotation is attributed to CBR’s report, rather than presented as a direct link to Liu’s post. Was Liu seriously criticizing the film?
The reported line reads as a brief joke at his own expense: Liu plays Shang-Chi, the film’s lead character. CBR’s account does not establish that he offered a fuller critique, explained the score, or criticized the production. It should not be described as an official Marvel rating or an extended review.
Why did the reply come on September 3?
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released on September 3, 2021, according to Disney’s film page. Liu’s reported reply landed exactly three years later, on the film’s third anniversary.

What is Shang-Chi about?
Disney describes the PG-13 film, which has a listed runtime of two hours, as a supernatural journey in which Shang-Chi confronts his past and protects the world from his father. Destin Daniel Cretton directed and co-wrote the film with David Callaham and Andrew Lanham. Liu stars alongside Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Florian Munteanu, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh and Ronny Chieng. Disney’s film page
The creative team also framed it as a family story. In a September 2021 Disney feature, producer Kevin Feige called it “the story of this father and son.” Cretton described Shang-Chi’s arc as “a journey of self-discovery, of growing up, of learning how to finally deal with pain that he’s been running away from his entire life.” Disney’s cast-and-crew feature
