Helberg spoke about fear and anxiety, not a confirmed diagnosis. In a June 2026 conversation on Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, he said he was “pretty paralyzed with fear and anxiety for, like, the first eight or nine years” of the show, according to Parade’s report.
He connected the distress with pressure and expectations accompanying the series’ success. Those are Helberg’s reflections on his experience, not an independently established medical explanation. The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons and ended in 2019, as Parade notes.
What did Helberg say about when it began?
In a 2022 conversation with co-star Mayim Bialik, Helberg placed the difficult period around the time the pilot was filmed and before he married Jocelyn Towne. In a separate 2026 interview, he estimated that the fear and anxiety lasted through the first eight or nine years of the series. In the 2022 conversation, Helberg said he saw different therapists and tried medication, which he described as having difficult side effects. Parade reports that a therapist Bialik recommended later helped him manage his mental health better. These are accounts of Helberg’s experience; they do not establish general guidance about therapy or medication.
Why do some accounts mention OCD?
The official page for Bialik’s 2022 episode describes the discussion as covering “his OCD stemming from his attempts to avoid failure.” That wording is the episode publisher’s description, not a verified clinical finding. Helberg’s 2026 interview coverage focuses on his own words about anxiety and fear. The accounts should not be treated as interchangeable diagnoses.

They do not establish whether he kept it private at another time, or when other people knew. “Secret health condition” is therefore a headline framing, not a supported description of a concealed or formally diagnosed illness.
