Shelfie was the app behind the claim that you could turn physical books into free e-books. The claim needs a correction: Shelfie did not scan a book’s pages or create a digital copy. It identified a print book and, when a publisher had authorized an offer for that title, let an owner claim a free or discounted digital edition.
What was Shelfie?
Shelfie was a publisher-participation service reported on in 2015 and 2016. It used photographs of bookshelves and covers to identify books, then matched eligible titles with publisher-supplied e-book or audiobook offers. It was neither a general-purpose scanning tool nor a promise that every print purchase came with a digital edition.
The headline “This app turns your physical books into free e-books” compressed that process into a more sweeping claim than the service supported. Shelfie could connect an owned book to an authorized digital companion; it did not convert the physical object itself. TIME’s December 14, 2015 account describes the service and its publisher arrangements.
How the original process worked
- Photograph the bookshelf. Shelfie’s image-recognition system attempted to identify the books from shelf or cover images.
- Check for an offer. Identification did not guarantee eligibility. The user had to find a digital offer for that particular title or edition.
- Verify ownership. For a title the user wanted, the reported process was to write their name on the copyright page, photograph it, and upload the image.
- Receive or access the digital edition. TIME described e-book files being sent by email and audiobook listening through the Shelfie app. The offer could be free or discounted, depending on the title.
This is a historical description, not a set of current instructions: the old app’s interface, device support, file formats, and redemption system should not be assumed to work today.

What “free” meant—and how limited the offer was
TIME reported figures attributed to Shelfie founder Peter Hudson in 2015. They describe the company’s claims at that time, not the size or availability of any current catalog.
| 2015 company-reported figure | What it meant |
|---|---|
| About 250,000 e-book titles | Shelfie said these titles represented about 15% of an average bookshelf; not every recognized book had an offer. |
| About 20,000 audiobook titles | The reported audiobook catalog was smaller than the e-book catalog. |
| Nearly 1,200 publishers | Participation did not mean every publisher or every title was included. |
| About 30% of eligible offers free | The remaining offers were described as discounted, not free. |
| Discounts of roughly 80% off comparable Kindle pricing | This was Shelfie’s description of discounts in 2015, not a guaranteed price for every title. |
These figures come from TIME’s report of Shelfie’s statements; they were not an audited measure of what a particular user could claim. That report also said Penguin Random House was not participating at the time, illustrating why the service could not cover every book a reader owned.

Why did Shelfie ask for proof of ownership?
The photographed copyright page was Shelfie’s reported operational check that the claimant possessed the physical book. It helped distinguish a claim based on an owned copy from one based only on seeing a title in a shop or library. It was a condition of this service, not a general legal rule that print-book owners are automatically entitled to e-books.
Did Shelfie scan the pages and make an e-book?
No. Its recognition technology identified titles; the digital editions came from participating publishers. It was not page-by-page scanning with optical character recognition, nor a way to create a new EPUB or Kindle file from any book on a shelf. The key distinction is that Shelfie matched books to rights-cleared digital offers rather than reproducing their text.

Did owning a print book give you the right to its e-book?
No general entitlement follows from owning a paperback or hardback. Print and digital editions involve separate rights and availability. Shelfie worked where a publisher or other rights holder chose to provide an offer; the service did not establish a general right to receive or create a digital copy of every owned book.
Eligibility could vary by publisher, title, country, edition, and format. A publisher might lack digital rights for a particular book, an international edition could have a different rights package, or an offer could be discounted rather than free. Even a recognizable book with an e-book edition was not necessarily eligible.

What happened to Shelfie, and can you use it today?
The original e-book-bundling service was widely reported in 2015 and 2016, but its current operation cannot be confirmed from the available sources. A MediaShift roundup dated August 2, 2016 linked to contemporary coverage of the idea; it does not establish present availability.
In 2026, products using the Shelfie name describe different functions. The Shelfie Reading Tracker listing describes cataloging and reading tracking, while Shelfiebook describes a searchable bookshelf catalog. Those descriptions are not evidence that either app provides the old publisher-backed e-book offers. Do not download a current same-name product expecting to claim free digital editions.

What to try if you own the print book already
- Check your public library. Search its digital catalog for the e-book or audiobook. Library access is a loan, not ownership, and availability depends on the library’s licenses and location.
- Look for a title-specific bundle. Check the publisher or bookseller’s listing for a print-plus-digital offer. Such bundles depend on the title and seller.
- Compare legitimate digital editions. If no bundle or library copy is available, buying the e-book or audiobook is a separate option; owning the print edition does not itself unlock it.
- Use cataloging apps for inventory, not conversion. A bookshelf or ISBN tracker can help you find and organize books, but cataloging a title does not supply its text.
Scanning a book yourself is a different activity from Shelfie’s service. The result can depend on the binding, page layout, illustrations, and OCR software, and legal treatment varies by jurisdiction and circumstances. A personal scan does not create publisher authorization to distribute or upload the file.
