He made the remarks before performing “The Mountain,” a song that addresses speculation about whether he likes girls or boys. He did not give himself a definitive sexual-orientation label.
What did Shawn Mendes say about his sexuality?
During his October 28, 2024, performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Mendes spoke about years of public discussion of his sexuality. ABC News and the Los Angeles Times reported his remarks from the concert.
“The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don’t really know sometimes, and I know other times.”
He added: “And it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that.” The ABC News account and the Los Angeles Times report both covered the speech.

Why did he talk about it before “The Mountain”?
Mendes made the comments before playing “The Mountain.” He said writing the song gave him a way to address the subject that felt close to his heart. Its lyrics refer directly to people’s claims about whether he likes girls or boys. The song is associated with his album Shawn, listed alongside the track on his official website.
He described sexuality as “such a beautifully complex thing” and said it was “so hard to just put into boxes,” according to the Los Angeles Times and Us Weekly.

Did Mendes announce a sexual-orientation label?
No. In these October 2024 remarks, he said he was figuring things out and sometimes did not know how he felt. He did not announce a definitive label. Lyrics, rumors, past relationships, or audience reactions should not be treated as a substitute for a label he chose to state himself.

The speech documents what Mendes said at Red Rocks on October 28, 2024: that he was still figuring out his sexuality and found the public scrutiny frightening and intrusive. It is a dated statement, not evidence by itself of what he may have said or how he may describe himself later. A Vogue opinion essay argued that people should have room to explore identity without pressure to adopt an immediate, lasting label; that is the author’s commentary, not a statement from Mendes.
