In a November 29, 2023, People interview, Shannen Doherty said she wanted to keep working and embracing life after learning that her stage 4 breast cancer had spread to her bones. “We are people who want to work and embrace life and keep moving forward,” she said. Doherty died from metastatic breast cancer on July 13, 2024; the interview is a historical update, not a current one.
What did Shannen Doherty say about the cancer spreading to her bones?
Doherty discussed the bone metastasis in an exclusive interview published by People on November 29, 2023. She spoke about continuing to live and work rather than treating a stage 4 diagnosis as the end of her creative life. “My greatest memory is yet to come,” she said in the interview, as reported by People via Yahoo.
In coverage of the interview, CBS News and the Los Angeles Times highlighted her challenge to assumptions that people with metastatic cancer cannot remain active or keep working. Her remarks described her own intentions and outlook; they were not a prediction about anyone else’s illness.
How her cancer disclosures unfolded
Doherty had spoken publicly about breast cancer since her initial diagnosis in 2015. Contemporary coverage reported that she entered remission in 2017 and disclosed a stage 4 recurrence in 2020. In June 2023, she revealed that the cancer had spread to her brain and that she had undergone brain surgery and radiation. The November 2023 interview added that it had spread to her bones, as reported by ABC News Australia and other outlets.
