Shane West has described his connection with Mandy Moore during A Walk to Remember as a mutual crush, strong on-set support and a friendship that lasted beyond filming. Moore has also recalled developing feelings for West while she was young and new to acting. Their comments describe affection and closeness; they do not establish that the actors dated.
What Shane West said about their connection
In a 2021 interview with Vulture, as reported by Entertainment Tonight on June 16, West said he thought he and Moore “both had a little bit of a crush.” He framed the connection as more than attraction, adding that they were there for each other “in the most honest and purest of ways.”

West gave a fuller description in an Entertainment Tonight interview published April 15, 2022. He called it a “healthy, natural crush and bond,” said, “We were very protective of each other,” and described Moore as a sweetheart and a longtime friend. His account presents a warm, supportive relationship during and after the film—not confirmation of a real-life couple.
What Mandy Moore remembered
In 2018, Moore recalled that she had partly “fell in love” with West. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, quoted by Teen Vogue on January 25, she explained that she was 16, inexperienced as an actor, and unsure she could distinguish West from Landon, the character he played. She also credited West with being patient and understanding with her.

Moore’s recollection is about her feelings and how closely she associated West with his role at the time. It should not be read as evidence that they were in a relationship. The distinction matters: Jamie and Landon’s romance is the film’s story, while Moore and West’s own accounts describe a crush, care and friendship.
How their on-set rapport showed up in 2002
In a January 25, 2002 interview with The Denver Clarion, West said he and Moore “got along very well” and described her as having an open, warm personality. He said he joked around to help her feel comfortable.

In a retrospective using archival press-junket footage, Entertainment Tonight reported on January 25, 2017, that West recalled filming a kiss on their first day on set. He said Moore was nervous, so he reassured her he would not do anything that made her feel weird and that they talked everything through. This account offers a specific example of the consideration he later described; it does not turn a filmed scene into proof of off-screen dating.

West’s 2021 and 2022 remarks are the clearest descriptions of a mutual crush and bond. Moore’s 2018 recollection adds her perspective on feeling drawn to him and on his support. The contemporaneous 2002 interview establishes that West said they got along and that he tried to put her at ease while they worked together.

Together, these accounts support a close, affectionate working relationship and enduring friendship. They do not say that West and Moore became a couple. Moore also spoke about the film’s relationship themes in a January 8, 2002 SPLICEDwire interview, saying, “You shouldn’t go into a relationship thinking you can change someone”; that was a comment about the story’s message, not a claim about her relationship with West.
