What did Serena Williams say about the cotton decoration?
In an Instagram Story, Williams asked, “How do we feel about cotton as decoration?” and said, “Personally, for me, it doesn’t feel great,” as quoted by The Independent. The report says she rubbed the cotton against her nails and shuddered.
In a follow-up clip, she examined a piece and compared its feel to cotton used with nail-polish remover, according to the Daily Dot and Yahoo. That describes her interaction with the material; it does not, by itself, explain why she objected to the display.
Why might cotton as decoration be sensitive?
Cotton has historical associations in the United States with slavery and forced labor. The Daily Dot included that context while also noting varied public reactions. The Independent cautioned that the reports did not make clear whether Williams was reacting to the feel of the cotton, its historical associations, or another concern.

The reports identify the location only as a New York City hotel. They do not name the property, and the coverage reviewed provides no hotel response. What was Williams doing in New York?
The Independent placed Williams in New York to help launch the SKIMS and Nike collaboration. The Daily Dot reported that the hallway video appeared the day after she attended the collaboration launch. The reports do not establish the exact sequence of the hotel encounter and the event, so the timing is best understood as part of the same New York visit.
