SEGA’s 2025 Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds commercial takes an unmistakable jab at Mario Kart World: it gestures toward an unnamed kart-racing rival, then pitches Sonic’s game as racing on “a whole ‘nother level.” That is a joke and a sales claim—not evidence that one game is objectively better. The useful distinction is the games’ approach to racing: SEGA built CrossWorlds around Travel Rings that transform the course between laps, alongside vehicle customization and cross-platform play.
How the commercial alludes to Mario Kart World
GamesRadar reported on September 15, 2025, that the commercial begins with the line, “We all know that kart racing game.” A blurred screen evokes Mario Kart World, followed by: “It’s great! We don’t need to show it to you.” The narration then pivots to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds: “But what if you can blast through and race on a whole ‘nother level?” GamesRadar’s report transcribes those lines; it is not an official ad transcript.
The wording avoids naming Nintendo’s game, but the unnamed rival, blurred image and immediate contrast make the reference plain. That is an interpretation of the commercial’s presentation; no official SEGA statement retrieved here spells out the creative intent. “Another level” is promotional language, not a measured comparison of quality, content or performance.
SEGA acknowledged the genre overlap
In an investor Q&A, SEGA Sammy explicitly said Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds overlaps with Mario Kart World in genre. The company described its response as making the game available on multiple platforms and pursuing collaborations with other companies’ strong intellectual properties to make it distinctive and expand sales. That is SEGA’s stated strategy, not proof that the differentiation succeeded. SEGA Sammy’s investor Q&A

What distinguishes CrossWorlds on the track
Travel Rings change the course mid-race
SEGA describes each race as three laps. After lap one, racers pass through a Travel Ring into a different world for lap two; they return to the original course for the final lap. The transition is the game’s clearest mechanical contrast: rather than keeping every lap on the same circuit, CrossWorlds changes the setting and course between laps. The structure is described in SEGA’s launch announcement.
Customization and crossover content
SEGA’s launch materials describe 23 Sonic characters in the base roster, more than 70 gadgets, and vehicle customization. Guest characters and crossover content arrive through updates or premium DLC, so what is included depends on edition and release timing.

Nintendo’s Switch listing specifies one to four players on one system, two to eight over local wireless, and two to 12 online. Nintendo’s listing also carries an ESRB notice for Mild Fantasy Violence and In-Game Purchases.
Choosing between the two games
The commercial frames CrossWorlds as an alternative to Mario Kart World, but the available official descriptions do not establish which is better overall or provide a consistent side-by-side feature audit. A more useful choice depends on what matters to you:

Release and sales figures in context
SEGA reported on October 23, 2025, that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds had sold more than one million units worldwide since launch. That is a dated publisher figure, not a current lifetime total. The same release reported “Overwhelmingly Positive” on Steam and a Metacritic user score above 9.0 as of October 23, 2025, for PlayStation 5 and Steam; those are historical, publisher-reported ratings rather than current scores. Physical editions
SEGA lists a physical standard edition, and Nintendo has a Switch product listing. Those announcements establish physical-product availability as an option, but not present-day stock or pricing in a particular country. SEGA also described a Japan-only Amazon.co.jp collaboration bundle; it should not be taken as an offer available in other regions.
