In May 2021, Ryan Sutter said he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease, alongside what he described as mold toxicity and possible co-infections. He and his wife, Trista, recounted severe symptoms and a difficult search for answers. Their comments document what they said publicly at the time; they do not establish Ryan’s current health or serve as a medical diagnosis for anyone else.
What Ryan and Trista Sutter said happened
Ryan discussed his illness on Trista’s Better Etc. podcast, as reported by ABC News on May 26, 2021. He said doctors had struggled to agree on whether Lyme disease explained his symptoms. He described the diagnosis this way: “The main diagnosis is Lyme disease with mold toxicity and some underlying co-infections, whether it’s Epstein-Barr, COVID, things like that.”
That wording reflects Ryan’s account as reported by ABC, not an independently verified medical record. The available reporting does not establish that mold toxicity or any co-infection was confirmed, nor does it provide a reliable update on his health since 2021. ABC News, May 26, 2021
Symptoms the Sutters described
Ryan listed itching without a rash, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, nausea, night sweats, fevers, deep bone, muscle and joint aches, and episodes of extreme fatigue. ABC reported him describing “periods of extreme fatigue, almost paralyzing fatigue.” Trista also described him feeling faint on short walks, waking up soaked in sweat, and experiencing what she called paralyzing fatigue.

Trista said the effort to find answers involved testing and obstacles with doctors and insurance. LymeDisease.org also recounted the couple’s descriptions and a social post from Trista about the difficult search. These reports help establish what the couple said, but their symptoms are not a diagnostic checklist for other people. LymeDisease.org, May 26, 2021
What the account does—and does not—tell us
The Sutters’ public comments were made in 2021. They describe Ryan’s experience and the uncertainty he said surrounded it then; they do not show whether he currently has Lyme disease, what treatment he received, or how he is doing now. Ryan also said he wanted to use his immune system to combat the conditions he described. That personal statement should not be read as treatment advice.

How Lyme disease is evaluated
Lyme disease is an infection transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. The CDC recommends FDA-cleared antibody tests used in a two-step process. Clinicians interpret results alongside symptoms, the likelihood of exposure, and possible alternative illnesses. Antibodies can take weeks to develop and may remain detectable for months or years after the bacteria are no longer present, so test results need clinical context. CDC guidance updated August 17, 2026 says early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment help prevent more serious disease. Most patients recover completely after recommended treatment, although some experience prolonged symptoms. CDC, Clinical Care of Lyme Disease

What is known about symptoms that continue after treatment
The CDC reports that, six months after treatment, symptoms such as fatigue, aches and difficulty thinking were 5–10% more common among people who had Lyme disease than among people who had not. The CDC page identifies supporting studies published in 2010 and 2021 and says the cause of prolonged symptoms is not known. The CDC notes that prolonged symptoms can have causes other than Lyme disease and advises people to work with a healthcare provider to evaluate them. Extended antibiotic treatment has generally not been shown to cure prolonged symptoms and can carry serious risks. These points are general guidance, not a conclusion about Ryan’s care or outcome.
