Rosie O’Donnell criticized the choice to have a sitting president appear on The View, calling it a “fluffy daytime TV show.” But she also said the booking was good for the program and expressed happiness for the show. She made the remarks on her Sirius XM radio show on July 28, 2010, the day before Barack Obama’s episode aired.
What did Rosie O’Donnell say about Obama appearing on The View?
In remarks attributed to her by Us Weekly’s July 29, 2010 report, O’Donnell said she had “mixed feelings” about Obama’s appearance. She objected to the idea of a sitting president going on what she called a “fluffy daytime TV show,” while allowing that an hour on Oprah might be different.

She also made clear that her criticism was not simply a complaint about the show receiving the guest. “I don’t really want to see him on The View, although I’m happy for them,” she said, according to the report. She called it “a good booking” and noted that Barbara Walters was returning that day after heart surgery.
When did O’Donnell make the remarks?
O’Donnell spoke on her Sirius XM radio show on Wednesday, July 28, 2010. Obama had prerecorded his appearance on The View that Wednesday, and the episode aired the following day, July 29. The contemporaneous Us Weekly article was also published July 29.

Her comments were therefore a reaction to the presidential booking, not an exchange with Obama on The View. The report does not say that Obama heard or responded to what she said.
Why did her opinion carry a former co-host’s perspective?
O’Donnell had co-hosted The View in 2006. Us Weekly reported that she left within the year after heated political disagreements with other panelists. That history gives context to her familiarity with the program, but the report does not establish that she had inside information about how Obama’s appearance was arranged.

What was Obama’s appearance on The View like?
The episode mixed political, international and social issues with lighter topics. The report mentions questions about Lindsay Lohan, Jersey Shore personality Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Mel Gibson. Those examples help explain the format O’Donnell was criticizing; they do not change the central distinction in her comments: she questioned the setting for a sitting president while recognizing that the booking benefited the show.

“Took a shot” is a punchy description of O’Donnell’s criticism, not a claim that she confronted Obama. Her reported remarks combined a clear objection to a president appearing on daytime television with praise for the booking’s value to The View and acknowledgment of Walters’ return.

The account comes from one contemporaneous secondary report attributing the words to O’Donnell’s radio show; the original audio was not independently reviewed.
