At a Teenage Cancer Trust concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall in March 2025, Roger Daltrey joked that getting older meant he was going deaf and now had “the joy of going blind.” He added that he still had his voice, then quipped that losing it too would give him “a full Tommy.” The remark was not a diagnosis: published reports do not specify the extent, cause or prognosis of any hearing or vision problems.
What did Roger Daltrey say?
While performing with Pete Townshend at a Royal Albert Hall concert benefiting the Teenage Cancer Trust, Daltrey told the audience: “The joys of getting old mean you go deaf. I also now have got the joy of going blind.” Sky News reported the remark on March 30, 2025, placing it at the first show in that year’s concert series. Sky News
Daltrey followed the joke by saying, “Fortunately, I still have my voice.” He added that if he lost it as well, he would have a “full Tommy.” The quotes here are as published by Sky News; the reviewed coverage does not establish a verified complete transcript or recording of the exchange.
What did he mean by “a full Tommy”?
“Tommy” refers to The Who’s 1969 album and rock opera. Its title character is deaf, mute and blind. Daltrey’s joke connected the character’s three conditions with his own comments about hearing and sight, then the possibility of losing his voice. It was a reference to the story, not a medical description of Daltrey.

When did he make the comment?
Sky News says the remark was made on the Thursday of the Royal Albert Hall concert series’ opening week; its March 30 report therefore places the performance on March 27, 2025. Parade gives March 26, creating a one-day discrepancy in the coverage, so the precise performance date is not consistent across reports. Sky also reported that Daltrey was stepping back from curating the series, a role he had held since its launch in 2000, while remaining an honorary patron. Sky News Parade
Did Daltrey say how bad his eyesight is?
No extent, diagnosis, cause, treatment or prognosis was reported. Rolling Stone UK specifically noted that Daltrey did not explain the extent of his vision problems; the phrase “going blind” alone does not establish that he is close to complete sight loss. That is a limit of what the remark and coverage establish, not an independent medical assessment. Rolling Stone UK

The hearing comment is similarly not a diagnosis or formal assessment. Parade reported that Daltrey struggled to hear the pitch and key of “The Song Is Over” over the drums during an initial attempt. In its account, he said, “To sing that song, I do need to hear the key,” and described hearing drums but not the pitch; he then completed the song on a second attempt. This is an account of one performance, not a measure of his hearing overall. Parade
